Alternate Title

Ongaku Shoujo
音楽少女

Synopsis

Ongaku Shoujo is an unfortunate “C-list” high school idol unit which barely makes any sales. In an effort to turn their bad luck around, their producer Ikehashi suggests that the unit needs a new member which is when they meet the skilled but tone-death Hanako Yamadagi who works at Pine Record. Will she be what it takes to turn their luck around in Ongaku Shoujo?

Anime Adaptation

This series was first released as a film produced by Studio DEEN and directed by Kenichi Ishikura for “Young Animator Training Project’s Anime Mirai 2015,” an annual project funded by the Japanese government in an effort to support training animators.

The Music Girls anime began airing on AT-X on July 6, 2018, and, like the film, is animated by Studio DEEN. It is directed by Yukio Nishimoto and written by Deko Akao.

The opening theme is “Eien Shonen” which is performed by Yui Ogura (the voice actress for Uori Mukae), and the ending theme is “Shinen Peace” performed by Ongaku Shoujo themselves.

Characters

Hanako Yamadagi (Voiced by: Seria Fukagawa)

Hanako works for Pine Record. Despite having just about everything she needs to be an idol, she is hopelessly tone death when it comes to music. She loves and has a lot of respect for the work of idols. She was also both born and raised overseas although her parents are both Japanese. Both are also global musicians and fly all over the world for touring. It was while looking through her mother’s music collection that she first heard idol music, and since then nothing has shined brighter to her than idols.

Sasame Mitsukuri (Voiced by: Karin Takahashi)

As an extremely curious person, no matter what happens around Sasame, she seems to enjoy it! She also wears glasses (although they don’t actually have lenses in them). It seems like all sorts of fun things will happen around Hanako, so Sasame tends to stick around her. She also understands Hanako well.

Miku Nishio (Voiced by: Miho Okazaki)

Miku has a curvy figure, stunning and fluffy hair, wonderful skin, and long eyelashes, all of which make her popular. She is also very talented at dancing which she first started doing as a way to lose weight, but dancing ultimately made her hungry which made her eat, creating a never-ending cycle.

Hiyo Yukino (Voiced by: Yuuko Ono)

An absolute genius with an IQ of over 200. This unfortunately resulted in school being extremely boring for her so she started to skip, and now she goes to a school dedicated for gifted students. She understands everything immediately so she has no experience or interest in memorizing everything. Despite seeing mostly everything as dull, there was one exception for her: music. This led her parents to actually push her to pursue music.

Shupe Gushiken (Voiced by: Miyuri Shimabukuro)

Ever since seeing a girl with a plain look like herself turn into a stunning idol on TV, Shupe was deeply moved and has pursued becoming an idol. Her mother is a makeup artist, as well, which led to her deep love for makeup including both putting it on herself and putting it on others. She looks like an entirely different person after putting it on. She has a slightly abrasive personality and comes from Okinawa

Roro Morooka (Voiced by: Nako Eguchi)

Despite looking 10, Roro is actually 18! She was raised by her grandmother, so her likes and things she knows are also a bit old-fashioned. When she catches a cold she wraps a green onion around her neck and puts umeboshi skin on her forehead.

Kotoko Kintoki (Voiced by: Lynn)

The leader of the Ongaku Shoujo group. Kotoko has been modelling since she was a baby so she has incredible style and experience which lead to her being like an older sister to the group. Being in the public spotlight has led to her being unable to know what her “true self” is. She’s the oldest child of her family, as well, and has many younger siblings, so she feels responsible for helping out with them by earning money.

Uori Mukae (Voiced by: Yui Ogura)

Kiri’s younger sister. Uori puts an endless amount of effort into her work and is the center of the group. Outside of her idol talent, she is also quite a great chef. She’s quick to say what’s on her mind and can be quite confrontational with Hanako as the the two cannot seem to get on the same page. She loves her older sister a great deal.

Kiri Mukae (Voiced by: Sumire Uesaka)

Uori’s older sister who is quite sickly. Kiri was not allowed to live at Dolce due to her strict parents, and she formed a sister unit with Uori at the time of her debut.

Haru Chitose (Voiced by: Manami Numakura)

A senior idol and a member of the unit H☆E☆S. Haru is spoiled, greedy, loves Eri, and is a bit of a dummy when it comes to her dynamic with Eri.

Eri Kumagai (Voiced by: Asami Seto)

A senior idol and another member of the unit H☆E☆S along with Haru. Eri plays the straight man in the pair’s comedy duo, and she is candid, calm, and precise. Eri also composes the music for Ongaku Shoujo.

Sarasa Ryuo (Voiced by: Mai Fuchigami)

A senior idol, model, and another member of the unit H☆E☆S. Sarasa is lively, gluttonous, and loves learning new things.
