Synopsis

It's a new year, and there are new challenges and rivals to duel! As the school year begins, Joe enters the fifth grade, and his best friends Kira and Cap are his classmates. Abaku declares the "King of Duelmatch," a tournament to determine the strongest Duelist, the "Duel Masters King." Powerful Duelists begin gathering in the city where Joe and his friends live. A fierce competition for the title of true No. 1 Duelist is about to begin! But what exactly is Abaku's true goal...?

Background

Duel Masters is a multimedia franchise that spans manga, anime, a trading card game, and video games. The original manga was written by written by Shigenobu Matsumoto and was serialized in Shogakukan’s CoroCoro Comic magazine from 1999-2005. Several manga followed including Duel Masters: Fighting Edge which ran from 2005-2008, Duel Masters Star Cross which ran from 2008-2011, Duel Masters Victory which ran from 2011-2014, and the spin-off manga Duel Hero:Dash, Duel Masters: Legend Champion VICTORY, and Duel Masters: Revolution.

A trading card game by Takara Tomy debuted in May 2002 and was later released in English by Wizards of the Coast. A spin-off to the TCG called Kaijudo was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2012 but was discontinued in 2014.

Video games based on the franchise have been developed by Takara, Atari, and Kids Station and include Duel Masters (2003), Duel Masters: Netto! Battle Arena (2003), Duel Masters 2: Invincible Advance (2004), Duel Masters: Sempai Legends (2004), Duel Masters 2: Kirifuda Shobu Ver. (2004), Duel Masters: Kaijudo Showdown (2004), Duel Masters 3 (2004), Duel Masters: Birth of Super Dragon (2005), and Duel Masters: Shadow of the Code (2005)

The first anime adaptation ran from October 2002 to April 2003, and since then sequels have been produced almost yearly and include Duel Masters Charge, Zero Duel Masters, Duel Masters Zero, Duel Masters Cross, Duel Masters Cross Shock, Duel Masters Victory, Duel Masters Victory V, Duel Masters Victory V3, Duel Masters Versus, Duel Masters Versus Revolution, and Duel Masters Versus Revolution Final.

Duel Masters King! is the 16th anime in the series and the second season of *Duel Masters King. It is being animated by Brain’s Base and features once again Hiroshi Ishiodori (Duel Masters!!, Kiss Him, Not Me, Rin-ne 3) as director with Yoichi Kato (Aikatsu!, The Idolm@ster Million Live!, Space Brothers) handling series composition, Yasuyuki Noda (Bikkuriman 2000, Granbelm, Princess Connect! Re:Dive) handling character designs, and Jun'ichi Igarashi (Duel Masters, Gokujo!! Mecha Mote Iincho, Rockman.EXE Beast+) composing the music. The anime will premiere in Japan on April, 5, 2021.

Characters

Joe Kirifuda (Voiced by: Yumiko Kobayashi)
A fifth grade elementary school student. He is an ordinary boy, but once he meets Decky he begins gradually growing up while battling with many rivals.

Decky (Voiced by: Setsuji Satoh)
He comes to the human world in search of a Duel Master. He sees Joe's talent for creature creation and works with him as a Duel Master candidate. He has the ability to materialize a picture of a creature he swallows and turn it into a card.

Kira (Voiced by: Toshiyuki Toyonaga)
Joe’s childhood friend and a fifth grader with a heroic sense of justice. He is level-headed and has outstanding athletic ability. He carries out his own justice in order to protect the Duel Masters world.

Bolts (Voiced by: Minoru Shiraishi)
A nice guy who wears speakers as headphones and travels everywhere on his skateboard. He has a strong friendship with Dachikko.

Momo Uraraka (Voiced by: Aki Toyosaki)
A classmate of Joe’s who turns out to be a princess. She has a curious personality.

Cap (Voiced by: Taichi Ichikawa)
A candidate for Duel Master of the Water Civilization, which boasts advanced scientific power. He has a cheerful personality and gets along with everyone easily. He is fond of saying "Brother.”

Smartphone: (Voiced by: Kumiko Watanabe)
Cap's partner. For some reason, he treats Decky as if he were one step away from him.

Abaku Onifuda (Voiced by: Ryohei Kimura)
A mysterious boy who controls an unknown demon creature card and reigns as the king of the Demon Card Kingdom. He declares that he will hold a "King of Duematch" that will involve the whole world. He stands in front of Joe with his overwhelming talent for dueling.
