Synopsis

One day, a salaryman named Ryo Amakusa is saved at the station by an unknown high school girl who turns out to be his little sister’s best friend, Ichika Arima. Ryo, who is a bit of a playboy, proposes a kiss and a date on the spot as a thank you, which only creeps out Ichika, to his dismay. However, he soon finds himself falling head over heels for her and, despite her apparent disgust for him, begins trying to win over her affection.

Background

Koi to Yobu ni wa Kimochi Warui began as a romantic comedy manga series by Mogusu which has been serialized online via Ichijinsha's digital manga magazine Comic POOL since January 2015. As of January 2021, seven tankobon volumes have been released.

An anime adaptation was announced by Ichijinsha in January 2020. It is being animated by studio Nomad and features Naomi Nakayama (Hunter x Hunter, Orange: Mirai, Steins;Gate 0) as director, Taku Yamada (Dropkick on My Devil!, Lupin the Third: Part 5, Hajimete no Gal) as assistant director, Yuko Kakihara (Aikatsu Friends!, Asobi Asobase, Cells at Work!) as series composer, Mariko Fujita (Futari wa Milky Holmes, Galaxy Angel, Rosario + Vampire) as character designer and chief animation director, and Hiroaki Tsutsumi (Akashic Records of Bastard Magical Instructor, Dr. Stone: Stone Wars, Teasing Master Takagi-san) composing the music. The opening theme song is "Monokuro City" by Ace Collection, and the ending theme song is "Rinaria" by MaRuRi to Ryuga. The anime will premiere in Japan on April 5, 2021 on AT-X and Tokyo MX.

Characters

Ryo Amakusa (Voiced by: Toshiyuki Toyonaga)
A 27-year-old salaryman who is the deputy manager of a prestigious company and the older brother of Ichika’s best friend, Rio. He is an elite ikemen with good looks, brains, and a high income. However, he is a scumbag (according to Rio) and a playboy. He thinks he is destined to be with Ichika and has a huge crush on her, but she doesn’t seem to appreciate or want his affection.

Ichika Arima (Voiced by: Yurie Kozakai)
A 17-year-old high school girl. A certain incident leads to her being passionately approached by Ryo. She finds his one-sided and overly direct approach to be distasteful along with how he expresses his affection, and she abuses him mercilessly.

Rio Amakusa (Voiced by: Rena Hasegawa)
A 17-year-old high school student who is classmates with Ichika and is Ryo’s younger sister. She is a member of the tennis club. She is popular due to her beauty, academic prowess, and athletic ability, but her cool personality and harsh, overbearing attitude also make people afraid of her. Although she keeps to herself about it, she supports Ryo’s love life.

Kai Tamaru (Voiced by: Junya Enoki)
A 17-year-old high school student who is classmates with Ichika and is a member of the literature club. He likes to read, and he and Ichika often talk about the romance novel Forward World together. Although he doesn’t talk much, a lot of girls see him as handsome and cool. He is surprisingly good at soccer.

Arie Matsushima (Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa)
A 27-year-old OL who works at the same company as Ryo. She hides the fact that she is an otaku. She is a fan of Forward World and likes the character Touhou just like Ichika. After Ryo finds out about her otaku hobbies, she unexpectedly develops a crush on him.

Masuda (Voiced by: Ryohei Kimura)
Ryo’s friend from his high school days who is a freelance photographer. He usually acts frivolous but is surprisingly serious as well. He is amused by Ryo’s crush on Ichika but supports him all the same.
