Synopsis

After completing their mission on the Mugen Train, Tanjiro and the others head out on their next assignment. Together with one of the strongest swordsmen in the Demon Slayer Corps, Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui, they head to the place where demons dwell, the entertainment district, where a new battle is about to begin.

Background

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba began as a manga series written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotoge that was was serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from February 2016 to May 2020. It has seen several spin-offs to date including Kimetsu no Yaiba: Tomioka Giyu Gaiden, Kimetsu no Aima!, and Kimetsu no Yaiba: Rengoku Gaiden.

Three light novels have also been released: Demon Slayer: Flower of Happiness by Gotoge and Aya Yajima which was released in February 2019, Demon Slayer: One-Winged Butterfly which was released in October 2019, and Demon Slayer: The Wind's Telltale Signs which was released in July 2020.

The first season of the TV anime adaptation was broadcast from April to September 2019, spanning 26 episodes. The anime was followed up by the film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train, a direct sequel to the anime which was screened theatrically in Japan beginning on Oct. 16, 2020. The film was also released in the US and went on to become the highest grossing film of 2020, bringing in $500 million in box office revenue worldwide.

The first half of the second season of the TV anime focused on retelling the events of the Mugen Train Arc and was broadcast from October to November 2021. The second half of the season will focus on the Entertainment District Arc. The anime is once again being produced by ufotable and features Haruo Sotozaki returning as director, with ufotable writing the scripts, Akira Matsushima handling character designs, and Go Shiina and Yuki Kajiura composing the music. Singer Aimer is performing both the opening theme song "Zankyosanka" and the ending theme song "Asa ga Kuru.” The anime premiered with a one-hour special on Dec. 5, 2021 and is available to stream through Crunchyroll, FUNimation Entertainment, and Hulu.

Characters

Tanjiro Kamado (Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae)
Tanjiro is a Demon Slayer Corps member who is adept at Water Breathing and Hinokami Kagura which he learned from his father. He is kind-hearted and cares greatly for his sister, Nazuko. He goes on a journey to avenge his family who was killed by demons and save his sister who was turned into a demon.

Nezuko Kamado (Voiced by: Akari Kito)
Nezuko is Tanjiro’s sister who was turned into a demon although she still holds on to some of her humanity and does not attack people. She is carried in a wooden box by Tanjiro during the day in order to avoid the sun and regain her strength.

Zenitsu Agatsuma (Voiced by: Hiro Shimono)
Zenitsu is a member of the Demon Slayer Corps who is adept at Thunder Breathing. He is a bit of a coward and faints when he becomes overcome with fear. He also loves girls and aspires to be a playboy.

Inosuke Hashibira (Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka)
Inosuke is a Demon Slayer Corps member who is adept at Beast Breathing and wears a boar mask. He was raised in the wild and fights using two serrated swords.

Kyojuro Rengoku (Voiced by: Satoshi Hino)
Kyojuro is the Flame Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps who has mastered Flame Breathing. He is a powerful swordsman and has a friendly personality. He goes to investigate the Mugen Train after 40 people go missing.

Tengen Uzui (Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi)
The current Sound Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps who fights using the Sound Breathing sword style. Flamboyant and flashy, he has a strict demeanor toward Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke. But underneath that, he also has a caring side. He is a very powerful and skilled fighter, and his skills are on part with Daki, one of the Upper Rank demons.

Daki (Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro)
One of Muzan’s Twelve Kizuki with the title of Upper Rank Six, Daki is a prideful and sadistic person who enjoys toying with her victims before killing them. Her Blood Demon Art “Obi Sash Manipulation” allows her to control the obi sashes she wears, which are as soft as silk yet as sharp as a Nichirin Blade.
