Synopsis

One summer day, Yoshikazu Miyano, a boy who loves Boys’ Love manga and has a complex about his feminine looks, witnesses a fight at school. He musters up the courage to intervene, only to be stopped at the last moment by delinquent upperclassman Shumei Sasaki, who intervenes for him. Ever since then, Miyano can’t stop thinking about Sasaki. The two hit it off when Sasaki asks to borrow one of Miyano’s favorite manga, and now the bad boy can’t help wanting to use every opportunity to get to know Miyano better.

Background

Sasaki and Miyano is a Boys’ Love manga series written and illustrated by Sho Harusono that has been serialized online via the website pixiv Comic since 2016. Media Factory has also released the series in collected tankobon volumes under their MFC Gene Pixiv Series, and the seventh and most recent volume was released in November 2020. In 2018, the series was adapted into a novel with artwork by Kotoko Hachijo that was published by Media Factory from October of that year to March 2020. A spin-off manga titled Hirano to Kagiura has been serialized in Media Factory’s Monthly Comic Gene magazine since March 2019 and has been released in two volumes as of July 2021. As of September 2021, the series has sold more than 700,000 copies.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in November 2020. It is being animated by Studio DEEN (Fate/stay night, Fruits Basket, Hozuki's Coolheadedness) and features Shinji Ishihira (Edens Zero, Fairy Tail, Log Horizon) as director and Takehiro Ueno (Cells at Work!, The Day I Became a God, Fairy Gone) as assistant director, with Yoshiko Nakamura (Junjo Romantica, Kirarin Revolution, Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World-) handling series composition, Maki Fujii (Blade Dance of the Elementalers, Destiny of the Shrine Maiden, Earl and Fairy) handling character designs, and Kana Shibue (Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, Devils' Line, Watashitachi no Mirai) composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is “Mabataki” by Miracle Chimpanzee, and the ending theme song is “Ichigo Sunset” by Yusuke Shirai and Soma Saito as their respective characters. The anime will premiere in Japan on Jan. 9, 2021 on Tokyo MX, TV Aichi, BSNTV, and other channels.

Characters

Shumei Sasaki (Voiced by: Yusuke Shirai)
Blood type O, born on June 17. He meets Miyano by accident in the summer of his second year of high school. He likes sweets and often has candy on him. He thinks Miyano is cute and likes to call him “Mya-chan.”

Yoshikazu Miyano (Voiced by: Soma Saito)
Blood type B, born on February 22. He’s a fudanshi who likes Boys’ Love manga and can’t help being a chatterbox when talking about his favorite things. He worries about his small stature and feminine looks. There was a girl he had a crush on in junior high. His current crush is Sasaki, who saved him from a certain incident, but he’s unsure of how to get closer to him. He doesn’t like sweets.

Taiga Hirano (Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka)
Blood type A, born on August 1. He is one of Sasaki’s classmates and a member of the disciplinary committee together with Miyano. Though bad with words, he’s good at caring for others and sometimes helps teach Sasaki how to study. He lives in the dorm and is roommates with an underclassman.

Jiro Ogasawara (Voiced by: Yuki Ono)
Blood type A, born on April 15. He is one of Sasaki’s classmates. Though seemingly coquettish, he is surprisingly friendly. He often fights with his girlfriend, who goes to a different school, but they seem to get along well regardless.

Masato Hanzawa (Voiced by: Yuma Uchida)
Blood type O, born on April 2. He is one of Sasaki’s classmates and is a member of the disciplinary committee together with Miyano. He is also the president of the table tennis club and the dorm leader, and he always seems to be busy.

Tasuku Kuresawa (Voiced by: Ryohei Arai)
Blood type A, born on September 14. He is one of Miyano’s classmates and is a member of the astronomy club. He likes Miyano’s BL-loving fujoshi girlfriend.

Gonsaburo Tashiro (Voiced by: Mitsuhiro Ichiki)
Blood type B, born on July 8. He is one of Miyano’s classmates and a member of the table tennis club. He is a mood maker who is always cheerful and energetic.
