Dolls’ Frontline

Synopsis

In the year 2045, the entire world has been contaminated with Collapse Fluid. With even the most basic needs such as food and shelter now hard to come by, the world plunged into World War III. What’s left after the war is a devastated world where civilization has been driven to the brink of extinction. But the resulting labor shortage from the war led to advancements in technology, and the Tactical Dolls (T-Dolls) were born. Though they look like human girls, the T-Dolls have abilities far exceeding that of humans thanks to their mechanical designs, and as the technology developed further, military organizations began adopting them for warfare.

In the midst of this, the AI of the military company Sangvis Ferri suddenly goes rogue and turns against humans, and now it’s up to the T-Dolls of the AR Team belonging to the private military company Griffin to put a stop to them and save humanity.

Background

Girls' Frontline is a media-mix franchise that began as a mobile strategy role-playing game for Android and iOS and has since spawned a manga and anime series. The game is developed by the Chinese company Mica Team and was released in China in May 2016 before being released globally in English in May 2018. A Japanese version of the game also launched in August 2018 under the name Dolls Frontline.

An official manga written by Ling titled Girls' Frontline: The Song of Dolls has been serialized in Ichijinsha’s Monthly Comic Rex magazine since September 2019 and has been released in four collected tankobon volumes as of September 2021. A four-volume anthology titled Dolls Frontline Dengeki Comic Anthology has also been released by Dengeki Bunko, and a separate anthology titled Dolls Frontline Comic Anthology has been released by Ichijinsha.

A TV anime adaptation produced by Warner Bros. Japan and Asahi Production was announced in January 2021. It features Shigeru Ueda as director, with Hideyuki Kurata handling series composition and scripts, Masaki Yamada handling character designs, and Takashi Watanabe composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is “BAD CANDY” by yukaDD, and the ending theme song is “HORIZON” by TEAM SHACHI. The anime will premiere in Japan in January 2022 and will be available to stream worldwide.

Characters

M4A1 (Voiced by: Haruka Tomatsu)
The leader of AR Team and a member of the private military company Griffin. She is a top-grade T-Doll created by 16LAB, a research institute belonging to the Important Operations Prototype Manufacturing Company (I.O.P.). She takes command of the T-Dolls when the Commander is absent. She has a gentle and calm personality and a strong sense of responsibility, but she is also a worrier due to her lack of real combat experience.

M16A1 (Voiced by: Nozomi Yamane)
A member of AR Team and Griffin. She is the team’s older sister and is a veteran with substantial combat experience. Though reliable in a fight, off duty she is lazy and drinks too much. She is very fond of her younger sister, M4A1, and is always looking out for her during battle. She seems to have once been assigned to the National Security Bureau. For some reason, she has a scar on her face she prefers not to repair.

ST AR-15 (Voiced by: Emiri Kato)
A member of AR Team and Griffin. She has a strong sense of responsibility and a calm, mature demeanor (or so it seems). She is the only member of AR Team who is a modified version of a civilian rifle and feels inferior for not being a genuine military weapon. She is close with her fellow teammates and is willing to risk her life for theirs.

M4 SOPMOD II (Voiced by: Yukari Tamura)
A member of AR Team and Griffin. She is the team’s mascot. She is child-like with a cheerful and friendly personality, but in battle she shows no mercy. She is especially brutal toward the Sangvis Ferri T-Dolls and likes to destroy them in the most sadistic way and play with their remains, which the others often chide her for. She and ST AR-15 are an odd pair.

Gentiane (Voiced by: Mikako Komatsu)
A young new Commander assigned to the Griffin forward operating base. Although inexperienced, she is able to make good decisions on the battlefield and is trusted by the T-Dolls. She also cares greatly for the T-Dolls and will not give them reckless orders that could harm them or cause a mission failure.

Kalina (Voiced by: Nao Toyama)
A back-office staff officer assigned to the Griffin forward operating base. Her main duty is to procure supplies. However, due to a chronic staff shortage, she also does other miscellaneous work and acts as Gentiane’s secretary. She is a bit on the shy side and is very serious when it comes to money.

Kruger (Voiced by: Akio Ohtsuka)
The president of Griffin. He was one of the most sought-after officers while in the military and founded Griffin after leaving. He is an excellent leader, having brought AR Team into the fold. His full name is Berezovic Kruger.

Agent (Voiced by: Hitomi Nabatame)
A T-Doll created by the weapons manufacturer Sangvis Ferri who is a high-end model with superb fighting ability. She is capable of taking command of the company’s T-Dolls. She has a calm and collected personality and always speaks politely, even to her enemies, but she looks down on others, especially the members of Griffin.

Scarecrow (Voiced by: Kaya Okuno)
A high-end model T-Doll created by Sangvis Ferri with superb fighting ability. She is the best in the company at collecting and analyzing information and faithfully carries out her duties. She has a cold, venomous personality and has a strong disdain for emotions. As such, she looks down on the Griffin T-Dolls who are loyal to humans.

Executioner (Voiced by: Shizuka Ito)
A high-end model T-Doll created by Sangvis Ferri with superb fighting ability. She serves as a scout and direct combatant. She is impulsive and has a rough personality, and she usually talks in a masculine tone. She prefers a fair fight and doesn’t like to bully the weak. She is good friends with Scarecrow, with whom she often partners up on operations.
