OtapediaClannad - Figures

Clannad remains a nostalgic favorite for fans of sentimental, heart-breaking anime. Originally a visual novel, the storyline of the anime adaptation is the most well-known. The focus on different types of family and growth within and without endears fans to the ensemble cast of female characters. Its origins in the bishoujo genre have inspired a decent catalog of figures in the past. However, in recent years the series has fallen out of production for most manufacturers. A few remain, including some newer releases in recent years. Three examples of enduring Clannad figures on the market are “Clannad Kyou Fujibayashi Breaking Point 1/6 Scale Figure Re-Release,” “Nendoroid Clannad Nagisa Furukawa,” and “Tomoyo Sakagami School Uniform Ver. Re-Release.”

Clannad Kyou Fujibayashi Breaking Point 1/6 Scale Figure

This figure from Kotobukiya recreates one of Kyou Fujibayashi’s most memorable scenes. She’s on her hands and knees, her face turned up facing forward. Her long purple hair falls forward in tendrils over her shoulder. The white lace bow in her hair helps draw attention to her lightly blushing expression. She wears her gym uniform with over-the-knee socks and soft indoor shoes. The folds in her uniform, particularly the volume in her puffy sleeves and on her shorts, reflect Kotobukiya’s high-quality sculpting. The two white lines running vertically on the sides of her shorts also follow the contours of the folds realistically. Small details include the small half zipper pulled down on the collar of her shirt. The accompanying base is a vaulting horse to complete the old school gym scenery.

Nendoroid Clannad Nagisa Furukawa Figure

The figure shows her in her school uniform with a carefully painted Hikarizaka crest and accompanying school bag. Her standard expression is her easy smile. Additional face plates show her with a closed eye smile, her mouth slightly open and blushing and a bashful open eye blush catching her mid-bite. The blushing captures her memorable shyness masking her bubbly side. Accessories include a metallic magical rainbow bread and her favorite anpan. She also has the iconic green dango plushie from her beloved characters, The Great Dango Family. Full articulation allows fans to pose her with whichever snack or accessory.

Tomoyo Sakagami School Uniform Ver. Figure

This scale figure of Tomoyo Sakagami recreates one of the anime illustrations of her underneath a flowering cherry blossom tree. The figure shows her standing with her left leg slightly popped. She is twisted to the left and brightly looking off in the distance. She wears a sweet smile as opposed to her usual stoic expression. Her Hikarizaka uniform fits close to her body fluttering gently in the wind. The wind’s movement is further represented in her hair as her soft gray tendrils fan outward. The distinct Clannad art style is faithfully depicted in her facial sculpting and painting, as her deep blue eyes slope slightly downward. She holds both a blue book tucked under her arm and a pair of glasses in her left hand. The glasses are removable so she can be posed with or without them and possibly other accessories that fit her delicately sculpted fingers.

Clannad Series Story

Clannad follows the third year of high school student Tomoya Okazaki. When Tomoya was young his mother died in a car accident, his father became an alcoholic to cope. Tomoya’s violent fights with his father led to him dislocating his shoulder, ruining his chances at basketball. His father backed off from abuse but began to treat Tomoya like a stranger, hurting him even more. Tomoya goes on as a cynical, delinquent young adult. At the beginning of his third year, he meets frail and peppy Nagisa Furukawa. Nagisa has to repeat her final year of school due to absences related to a mysterious illness. She wants to join the now-disbanded Drama Club and Tomoya decides to help her restart the club. Throughout the story, Tomoya and Nagisa grow closer as he learns more about the idea of family.

Clannad Series Development

Clannad began as a visual novel from software company Key The visual novel features a branching narrative where the player as Tomoya can choose from a lineup of five heroines to romance. Scenario writer Jun Maeda got the idea for Clannad when thinking of a story that dealt with the themes of “people and town” and “humanity.” Originally, Key announced the game in 2001 with a planned release date in 2002. Lengthy revisions pushed the release to limited access in April 2004 and the full version in August 2004. The game was wildly successful, ranking number one in bishoujo game sales twice after its release. The series received a manga adaptation in Comic Rush from 2005 until 2009. An anime adaptation came out in 2007 following the first half of the visual novel story with a second season covering the second half titled Clannad After Story in late 2008.
