Star Wars Series Story
In a distant galaxy, humans, aliens, and androids live together in an interplanetary system. In this universe, a mystical power called the Force binds the galaxy together. Adept Force users form two knight orders: the Jedi, who side with the light using peace, and the Sith, who side with dark using fear and manipulation. The struggle between light and dark plays against the backdrop of political turmoil. The democratic Galactic Republic faces corruption by its leader, Palpatine, a member of the Sith. Its remnants form the authoritarian Galactic Empire. Light aligned members of the Rebel Alliance fight the Empire in a long civil war, eventually defeating the Empire and restoring peace. Surviving factions of the Empire form the First Order, a group that seeks to destroy the New Republic and instate military rule. Past members of the Rebellion help lead the Resistance to stop the First Order from taking power.
Star Wars Series Development
After the success of American Graffiti, director George Lucas wanted to produce a space opera. The first film premiered under the name Star Wars in 1977 and instantly became a box office hit. It and the following film, The Empire Strikes Back, are widely considered some of the best films of all time. The first trilogy ended in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. In the early 2000s, a prequel trilogy came out following the fall of the Republic and the fate of Luke and Leia’s parents. While the prequels received mixed reviews, they inspired a new generation of Star Wars fans and rekindled the older fandom. In 2016, Lucasfilms released the first of the sequel trilogy, fulfilling his 1978 desire to create “three trilogies of nine films.” The Star Wars universe has since expanded to include several spinoff movies and series, novels, and games.
