OtapediaGantz - Figures

The afterlife has always been a popular subject for fiction. Anime and manga often feature some of the most creative depictions of what happens after leaving this world. In the Gantz universe that posthumous existence is a kill-based video game. The concept alone made Gantz interesting, but the series made a name for itself through intense gore, violence, and a dedication to gritty realism at the beginning of the movement’s ascent. Gantz aesthetics, all jet black, and streamlined futurism make for highly detailed and sometimes breathtaking artistic figures. However, the fan-favorite girls of the series also have their fair share of representation. The best figures for hardcore Gantz fans are “Hdge Technical Statue Gantz:O Anzu X-Shotgun Ver.,” “Gantz:O Hard Suit Hachiro Oka 1/6 Scale Figure,” and “Gantz Reika Bunny Ver. 1/4 Scale Figure.”

Gantz:O Anzu X-Shotgun Ver. (Hdge Technical Statue) Figure

Union Creative beautifully captures Osaka Team member Anzu with a combination of expert painting and sculpting work. The complex full-body Gantz suit features a variety of diverse fabric textures. The contrast of the glossy vinyl leather components and matte spandex show off Anzu’s full curvy figure. Notably, the non-form fitting gather of material on her back is expertly carved, adding to the figure’s sense of realism. Her early nonchalance about the Gantz mission shows in her relaxed pose. She holds her X-Shotgun in her left hand, pointed down with her finger resting off the trigger. Her soft smile almost has an air of mocking disbelief, much like her first interactions with Kato.

Gantz:O Hard Suit Hachiro Oka 1/6 Scale Figure

From the Gantz:O film, this figure shows none other than the seven-time Gantz winner in his collection of the best alien-hunting gear: Hachiro Oka. Oka himself is less the focus of this figure. Rather, it’s his giant hard suit mecha, completed with the points from his seven previous runs through the Gantz game. The hugeness of the mecha is directly translated in the 1/6 scale. At its max height, the figure nearly reaches two feet. But the intricate sculpting of mixed materials really brings this figure to life. Viewers can almost feel the hexagonal mesh weaving on the main body just by sight. The thick leather pads aren’t shiny and pristine but weathered by numerous battles. Each monitor button features the small blue outline of a human figure. Every detail is carefully considered and on display, showing fans the most realistic portrayal of Gantz technology.

Gantz Reika Bunny Ver. 1/4 Scale Figure

This figure shows an ever-popular beautiful ex-idol Reika in a uniquely Gantz bunny costume. As with the rest of the FREEing line, fans can expect a beautiful realistic touch and visual dimension from the use of real fishnet stockings. However, Reika’s bunny costume stands out from the rest. In a nod to the original Gantz suit, the bodice contains side panel accents featuring the blue and white monitor buttons. The buttons also replace the traditional bowtie and wristlet cufflinks. Her bunny ears themselves are composed of these buttons and instead of heels, she wears the Gantz suit boots. Another unique accessory is her X-Shotgun, brandished, and ready to fire. Fans will also appreciate the continued attention to detail on her facial composition, both the sculpting and painting representing her depiction in the manga.

Gantz Series Story

Two high school students, Kurono Kei and Kato Masaru die after attempting to save a homeless man from an oncoming subway train. After dying, they wake up to find themselves in a strange apartment with other confused, recently deceased people. A large black orb, called Gantz, supplies the group with suits, weapons, and missions. These missions involve killing aliens living on Earth unseen by living humans. In this game-like system, each kill awards a Gantz participant points, which can be redeemed for more weapons and a chance for revival. Surviving and completing missions means a chance to return home, but will Earth be safe to go back to with the looming alien catastrophe?

Gantz Series Development

Series creator Hiroya Oku came up with the idea for Gantz in high school. After working on a similar series, Oku ended it citing disinterest and returned to Gantz. The manga ran in Shueisha’s seinen (adult) manga magazine Weekly Young Jump from 2000 until 2013. In 2004, Gonzo began airing an anime adaptation of the series on Fuji TV. Due to the graphic violence and sexual content of the series, episodes often faced heavy censorship. A pair of live-action films, starring Japanese idol Kazunari Ninomiya, premiered in January and April of 2011. Subsequently, a 3D CGI animated film, Gantz:O, came out in 2016. The series spurred several manga spin-offs and sales now exceed 20 million volumes worldwide.
