Synopsis

Ko Yamori is a 14-year-old junior high school student who has been having trouble sleeping lately due to being restless in his boring life and begins walking the streets late at night. One night, he happens upon a girl named Nazuna Nanakusa who calls herself a “night-walker,” but she’s actually a vampire! Fascinated by the night and Nazuna, Ko asks her to make him a vampire, but she tells him that he first must fall in love with her! A love story about a boy and girl who meet in the dead of night begins!

Background

Call of the Night started as a manga series written and illustrated by Kotoyama that began serialization in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday shonen manga magazine in August 2019. As of June 2022, 11 collected tankobon volumes have been published under the Shonen Sunday Comics imprint. As of November 2021, the series has over 1.6 million copies in print. Viz Media have licensed the series for English release in North America and have published eight volumes as of June 2022.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in November 2021. It is being produced by LIDEN FILMS and features Tetsuya Miyanishi as chief director and Tomoyuki Itamura as director, with Michiko Yokote penning the script, Haruka Sagawa handling character designs, and Yoshiaki Dewa composing the music. Creepy Nuts will perform both the anime’s opening and ending theme songs, "Datenshi" and “Yofukashi no Uta.” The anime will premiere in Japan on July 7, 2022 during Fuji TV’s noitaminA programming block. It will be simulcast overseas exclusively through HIDIVE as it airs.

Characters

Ko Yamori (Voiced by: Gen Sato)
Ko is a second-year junior high school student. Although he does well in his studies and school life, he grew tired of it and is currently skipping school. Perhaps because of that, he has been having trouble sleeping at night. The first time he goes out at night he meets Nazuna. He isn’t good with girls but is trying to fall in love with Nazuna in order to become a vampire. He seems to have a taste for blood. His special skill is pretending to be asleep.

Nazuna Nanakusa (Voiced by: Sora Amamiya)
Nazuna is a free-spirited night walker and vampire. She meets Ko one night and invites him to join her, saying, “Let’s stay up late until we’re satisfied with today.” She is impressed by the taste of Ko’s blood and wants to keep enjoying it. She likes dirty jokes but is shy when it comes to talking about love. She gets embarrassed easily. She loves beer.

Akira Asai (Voiced by: Yumiri Hanamori)
Akira is a second-year junior high school student who lives in the same apartment complex as Ko and is his childhood friend. She is an early riser who begins seeing Ko in the early morning after his all-nighters with Nazuna.

Seri Kikyo (Voiced by: Haruka Tomatsu)
Seri is a vampire who approaches Ko after hearing that Nazuna has become friends with a human. She and Nazuna don’t get along. She is a master of love.

Niko Hirata (Voiced by: Eri Kitamura)
Niko is a vampire who tries to turn Ko into a vampire to increase the number of humans who know of the existence of vampires. In order to increase his household’s numbers, he is good at acting popular with humans.

Kabura Honda (Voiced by: Shizuka Ito)
Kabura is a vampire who abducts Ko after learning that he has become friends with Nazuna and taking an interest in him.

Midori Kohakobe (Voiced by: Naomi Ozora)
Midori is a vampire who is popular with virgins. She has driven several communities crazy with her storytelling.

Hatsuka Suzushiro (Voiced by: Azumi Waki)
Hatsuka is a vampire who uses “boku” when referring to herself. She calls Nazuna Nanakusa-chan and is popular with both boys and girls.

Mahiru Seki (Voiced by: Kensho Ono)
Mahiru is a second-year junior high honor student who excels at sports. He thinks of himself as Ko’s friend. His family runs a flower shop.

Akihito Akiyama (Voiced by: Hiroyuki Yoshino)
Akihito is a dull guy who likes Seri. After being dumped by his ex, he falls over drunk and is approached by Seri. His nickname is Akkun.

Kiyosumi Hirakawa (Voiced by: Yoko Hikasa)
Kiyosumi is a 24 year old who works for a publisher. She is exhausted from work and has trouble sleeping. She is approached by Nazuna, a self-proclaimed cuddler, and is captivated by her massage.
