Synopsis

In the age when samurai ruled Japan… The Shinsengumi, who work to protect the peace in Kyoto, were exterminated by the Masked Demons except for a sole survivor and seven criminals were chosen as their replacements. They are led by Ichibanboshi, whose parents were killed by the Masked Demons and who is the replacement for Commander Isami Kondo, and together they pursue Masked Demons to get their revenge. Former criminals rise up to restore the world as the curtain rises on their crazy story!

Background

Shine On! Bakumatsu Boys is an upcoming original TV anime being animated by Geno Studio and produced by Twin Engine. It is being directed by Tetsuo Hirakawa, who is also credited as the series composer, and other staff members include Masafumi Yokota, who is adapting Hiroyuki Takei’s original character designs for animation, Naho Kozono and Toshie Kawamura, who are handling sub-character designs, and Yasuharu Takanashi, who is composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Ichiban Hikare! -Bucchigire!-" by Takanori Nishikawa, and the ending theme song is "Danzai Democracy" by Jizou Sonzai name-less. The anime will premiere in Japan on July 8, 2022 on Tokyo MX and BS11 and will be streamed overseas through Crunchyroll as it airs.

Characters

Ichibanboshi (Voiced by: Gen Sato)
Ichibanboshi is the replacement for Shinsengumi Commander Isami Kondo. He has hated samurai ever since his family was killed by masked samurai when he was young. He likes to act on the fly and has a strange way of thinking.

Sakuya (Voiced by: Shunichi Toki)
Sakuya is the replacement for Shinsengumi Vice-Commander Toshizo Hijikata. She is a cool-headed former assassin who is a stickler for the rules and doesn’t get along with Ichibanboshi.

Heisuke Todo (Voiced by: Toshiyuki Toyonaga)
Heisuke is the sole survivor of the Shinsengumi. Due to his feelings for the real Shinsengumi who are now deceased, he is dedicated to “truth” and “bushido.”

Akira (Voiced by: Sumire Uesaka)
Akira is the replacement for Soji Okita. She is highly competent, from sword fighting to academics, and is a hard worker who is always training. She is the only female member of the replacement Shinsengumi, and she normally dresses like a man.

Sogen (Voiced by: Shinichiro Miki)
Sogen is the replacement for Keisuke Yamanami. He is a mad scientist who is crazy about human autopsies and excels at scientific experiments and inventions.

Suzuran (Voiced by: Yuto Uemura)
Suzuran is the replacement for Hajime Saito. Though a monk, he is also a playboy with a fondness for women. He has a sincere side and mourns any soul regardless of their religious sect.

Gyataro (Voiced by: Wataru Takagi)
Gyataro is the replacement for Shinpachi Nagakura. He is a crime collector who has committed all sorts of crimes. He was the leader of a gang of orphans. He has good leadership skills and cares for others.

Bo (Voiced by: Fukushi Ochiai)
Bo is the replacement for Sanosuke Harada. He is a major glutton who thinks only of food, but when given a brush he is a skilled calligrapher. He is gentle but strong.

Rashomaru (Voiced by: Taku Yashiro)
Rashomaru is the leader of the Masked Demons, a mysterious organization that distributes eerily glowing swords to ronin warriors.

Katamori Matsudaira (Voiced by: Yusuke Shirai)
Katamori is the daimyo of the Aizu Domain. He is in charge of the Shinsengumi, which protects the peace in Kyoto. In order to keep the Shinsengumi alive after the deaths of its senior officers, he decided to carry out an operation to replace them.

Teijiro Akizuki (Voiced by: Koji Ishii)
Teijiro is a vassal who serves the Matsudaira clan of Aizu.
