Synopsis

In order to save the life of their younger sister Himari, twin brothers Kanba and Shoma Takakura search for the Penguindrum under the command of a mysterious penguin hat. Meanwhile, believing in her own destiny, high school girl Ringo Oginome continues to make the events written in her diary come true. All the while, Masako Natsume continues trying to get her hands on Ringo’s diary in order to find guidance to a new destiny. Ten years have passed since they began searching for the Penguindrum, and now Kanba and Shoma, who once boarded a train that changed their destiny, have returned for a moment from that destined place.

Background

The Mawaru Penguindrum series began as an original TV anime produced by Brain's Base that was written by Kunihiko Ikuhara (also called Ikuni Chowder) and Takayo Ikami. The anime was broadcast in Japan from July to December 2011 and spanned 24 episodes.

A novel adaptation written by Kunihiko Ikuhara and Yoshihiko Takahashi with artwork by Lily Hoshino was published by Gentosha under the Gentosha Comics imprint from July 2011 to February 2012 and was released in three volumes.

A manga adaptation by Isuzu Shibata was serialized in the monthly magazine Comic Birz from May 2013 to January 2017. It was published by Gentosha in five collected tankobon volumes and was licensed for English release in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment.

The film’s theme song is “Boku no Sonzai Shomei” by the Yakushimaru Etsuko Metro Orchestra. The film will be released in theaters in Japan on July 22, 2022.
