Synopsis

Set slightly after the events of the anime, Rin Shima has left her hometown of Yamanashi and taken a job at a small publishing company in Nagoya, where she lives alone. One weekend, while making plans for a touring trip, she receives a message from her high school friend Chiaki, who is in town. The two get together and Chiaki tells Rin about how she’s working for a tourism promotion company in Yamanashi and is in charge of redevelopment plans for a site that had been closed down several years prior. Rin casually remarks, “Why not turn it into a campground?” which sets Chiaki into motion.

Nadeshiko, who is working at an outdoor store in Tokyo; Aoi, who is an elementary school teacher in Yamanashi; and Ena, who works at a salon in Yamanashi. These former friends connected by camping will come together once more to take on a new challenge and develop a campsite!

Background

Laid-Back Camp started as a manga series written and illustrated by Afro that was serialized in Houbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara Forward magazine from July 2015 to 2019 when it was transferred to the Comic Fuz website and app. The 11th volume of the collected tankobon manga was released in January 2021. The manga has been licensed for English release in North America by Yen Press. The series has also received a live-action TV drama which was broadcast from January to March 2020 and a video game titled Laid-Back Camp Virtual is in development by Gemdrops and will be released in winter 2021 on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, iOS, and Android.

Laid-Back Camp the Movie is an upcoming movie set after the events of the anime. It is being produced by C-Station and sees returning staff members from the anime, including Yoshiaki Kyougoku as director and Mutsumi Sasaki as character designer, with Jin Tanaka and Mutsumi Ito penning the screenplay and Akiyuki Tateyama composing the music. The film’s opening theme song is “Sun Is Coming Up” by Asaka, and the ending theme song is “Mimoza” by Eri Sasaki. The film will open in theaters in Japan on July 1, 2022.

Characters

Nadeshiko Kagamihara (Voiced by: Yumiri Hanamori)
An enthusiastic and energetic girl who transfers to Motosu High School and befriends Rin after she gets lost near Mt. Fuji. She goes on to join her school’s Outdoor Activities Club.

Rin Shima (Voiced by: Nao Toyama)
A quiet girl who enjoys camping alone during the off-season. She befriends new student Nadeshiko after coming to her aid and sparks an interest in her in the art of lazily camping.

Chiaki Oogaki (Voiced by: Sayuri Hara)
The president of Motosu High’s Outdoor Activities Club, Chiaki is a fan of boisterous hedonism and has a chivalrous personality. She wears glasses and has twin tails. She is affectionately called “Aki-chan” by her friends.

Aoi Inuyama (Voiced by: Aki Toyosaki)
A founding member of the Outdoor Activities Club together with Chiaki, Aoi is the peacemaker of the group who has a calm older sister air about her and speaks in a Kansai dialect. She is called “Inuko” by Chiaki.

Ena Saito (Voiced by: Rie Takahashi)
A schoolmate of Rin’s, Ena chats with Rin through text while she’s camping. Though she has little interest in camping, due to her relationship with Rin, Chiaki sees her as the key person to convince Rin to join the Outdoor Activities Club.

Ayano Toki (Voiced by: Tomoyo Kurosawa)
Nadeshiko’s childhood friend who lives in Hamamatsu. Nadeshiko calls her “Aya-chan” and she has known her since junior high. Her characteristic is her somewhat dour mood.

Minami Toba (Voiced by: Shizuka Ito)
A new teacher at Motosu High School. She enjoys the outdoors with her sister, and she becomes the advisor to the Outdoor Activities Club. She is knowledgeable about camping, and she is sometimes strict as an advisor. She has a penchant for alcohol, especially sake, and sometimes gets a bit too carried away.

Sakura Kagamihara (Voiced by: Marina Inoue)
Nadeshiko’s older sister who is a university student. Though strict at times, she cares deeply for her sister and treats her well. She has a driver’s license and drives Nadeshiko to and from camping in her beloved SUV.

Akari Inuyama (Voiced by: Risae Matsuda)
Aoi’s younger sister. Like Aoi, she speaks with a Kansai dialect. She is an innocent girl, and Chiaki calls her “Chibi Inuko.”

Narrator (Voiced by: Akio Ohtsuka)
