Synopsis

Ryoma Echizen participates in the U-17 Japan national team training camp but is ordered to leave after breaking the camp’s rules. After leaving the camp, Ryoma decides to represent the U.S. in the U-17 World Cup at the invitation of his older brother, Ryoga. Tezuka, who has gone to Germany to become a professional, and Ryoma, who has become a member of the U.S. national team. With both having become enemies of the Japan national team, the U-17 World Cup begins!

Background

The Prince of Tennis II started as a manga series written and illustrated by Takeshi Konomi that is the direct sequel to the hit sports series The Prince of Tennis. It began serialization in Shueisha's Jump Square shonen manga magazine in March 2009 and has been published in collected tankobon volumes under the Jump Comics SQ imprint. The 36th volume will be published in July 2022.

Several anime adaptations of the series have been created, including a 13-episode TV anime produced by Production I.G and M.S.C that was broadcast from January to March 2012, a 10-episode OVA (original video animation) titled The Prince of Tennis II OVA vs. Genius 10 that was released with the anime DVDs, and a two-part ONA (original net animation) titled The Prince of Tennis II: Hyotei vs. Rikkai Game of Future that was released in February and April 2021.

The Prince of Tennis II: U-17 World Cup is the upcoming second season of the TV anime adaptation and was announced in October 2021 during the series’ 20th anniversary event. It is being produced by M.S.C and Studio KAI and features Keiichiro Kawaguchi as director, with Mitsutaka Hirota handling series composition, Akiharu Ishii handling character designs and also credited as chief animation director, and Chihiro Tamaki composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is “I can fly” by Yoshiki Ezaki and Bleecker Chrome, and the ending theme song is "Dear Friends” by TeniPri Artistars. The anime will premiere in Japan on July 6, 2022 on TV Tokyo, TV Osaka, and TV Aichi. It will also be streamed overseas through Crunchyroll as part of their 2022 summer lineup.

Characters

Ryoma Echizen (Voiced by: Junko Minagawa)
After being ordered to leave the U-17 Japan national team training camp, Ryoma is invited by his older brother Ryoga to join the US national team. He takes on tough enemies using his outstanding sense for the sport and overwhelming technique.

Ralph Rhinehart (Voiced by: Hiroki Takahashi)
The captain of the US national team. Even more so than his tennis abilities, he projects leadership qualities. He gives harsh advice with a gentle smile and encourages every player to reach their potential.

Ryoga Echizen (Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano)
He hides his true feelings and stands out for doing whatever he pleases. He always worries about his brother Ryoma and invites him to join the US team after being ousted from the U-17 Japan national team training camp.

Dodo Obando (Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda)
He goes by the nickname “Birdman” due to the insane jumping ability he was born with. He is an older brother type who is good at caring for others, and he sees Ryoma favorably after their first meeting.

Kiko Balentien (Voiced by: Takayuki Kondo)
Though the shortest member of the team, he is an exceptional player who won the state championship. He has a cheerful and optimistic personality.

Alan Hopkins (Voiced by: Naru Kawamoto)
Nicknamed "Mister Smart,” he is always quiet and kind and keeps up a gentlemanly appearance. He secretly supports Ralph. He is the vice-captain of the team.

Rocky Meredith (Voiced by: Masaya Onosaka)
One of the candidates for the US national team. He respects Ralph’s skills. He is a wild fighter who uses his power to knock out his opponents.

Maxwell (Voiced by: Kohei Kiyasu)
One of the candidates for the US national team. He is nicknamed “Runaway Train Maxwell” for being reckless and hot-headed. He is confrontational toward Ryoma.
