Synopsis

Though good looking, Yuya Niyodo is a lazy, unmotivated idol who doesn’t sing, doesn’t dance, and doesn’t do fan service. He entered the entertainment industry to make money, but his lack of enthusiasm leads to him getting sacked from his talent agency. But then, he meets the ghost of the legendary idol Asashi Mogami! She wants to continue being an idol even after her death and Yuya wants to make money, so the two decide to pair up as they aim for the top of the idol world. The story of a lazy idol possessed by a legendary idol begins!

Background

Phantom of the Idol started as a manga series written and illustrated by Hijiki Isoflavone that began serialization in Ichijinsha's Monthly Comic Zero Sum shojo manga magazine in December 2017. As of January 2022, five collected tankobon volumes have been published. The series has been licensed for English release in North America by Kodansha USA, who published the first volume in May 2022.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in November 2021. It is being produced by Studio Gokumi and features Daisei Fukuoka as director, with Yasuko Aoki handling series composition and scripts, Saori Hosoda credited as character designer and chief animation director, and Myu handling the music. The anime’s fictional idol group ZINGS is performing both the opening and ending theme songs, "Let's ZING!" and “Kimikira.” The anime will premiere in Japan on July 1, 2022 on TV Tokyo and BS11.

Characters

Yuya Niyodo (Voiced by: Fumiya Imai)
Yuya is an idol who, despite his good looks, is trash due to being lazy and unmotivated. He got into the business thinking it would be an easy and fun way to make money. Though a member of the idol unit ZINGS, he doesn’t sing, dance, or do fan service. After meeting the ghost of legendary idol Asahi, the two decide to team up to get to the top of the idol world.

Asahi Mogami (Voiced by: Nao Toyama)
Asahi is a legendary idol of unrivaled popularity. She died a year prior in a traffic accident, but her lingering attachment to being an idol caused her to become a ghost. Seeing Yuya as her chance to continue working as an idol by being able to possess him, the two decide to team up.

Kazuki Yoshino (Voiced by: Shun Horie)
Kazuki is a member of ZINGS along with Yuya. He has a kind and considerate personality and always follows Yuya around. He lacks confidence in himself and has a pessimistic side.

Hitomi Shinano (Voiced by: Eri Kitamura)
Hitomi is the president of the talent agency Shinano Entertainment. Though a skilled leader, she’s at a loss as to what to do with Yuya.

Kasenjiki (Voiced by: Hitomi Ueda)
Kasenjiki is a ZINGS otaku and a Yuya stan. She is kind to newcomers and is enthusiastic about making ZINGS well known. She attends their live shows wearing a happi coat.

Shigutaro (Voiced by: Manaka Iwami)
Shigutaro is a ZINGS otaku and a Yuya stan along with Kasenjiki and Tsugiko. Among the three, she is the only one in college.

Tsugiko (Voiced by: Yo Taichi)
Tsugiko is a ZINGS otaku and a Yuya stan along with Kasenjiki and Shigutaro. She’s the type to show her support through money.

Hikaru Setouchi (Voiced by: Takuma Terashima)
Hikaru is the leader of the popular idol group Cgrass. He seems to have an interest in Yuya.

Chihiro Misaki (Voiced by: Takuya Sato)
Chihiro is a member of the popular idol group Cgrass. He’s a total grandma’s boy.

Akira Uchihama (Voiced by: Tatsuyuki Kobayashi)
Akira is a member of the popular idol group Cgrass. He’s a happy-go-lucky guy and a smooth talker.

Yukinari Nada (Voiced by: Haruki Ishiya)
Yukinari is a member of the popular idol group Cgrass. He is the youngest member of the group.

Homare Hakata (Voiced by: Yohei Azakami)
Homare is a member of the popular idol group Cgrass. He is the eldest member of the group and has a worldly wisdom.

Narrator (Voiced by: Sho Hayami)
