OtapediaGundam - Figures

The Gundam series is one of the most recognizable mecha franchises to have ever been created. The franchise got its start in 1979 with the anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam, which was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatate. Although the series was considered to be a commercial failure in its beginning after its 39 episode run, production managers were able to push the original series to 43 episodes. After Bandai purchased the rights to produce plastic models of the Gundam robots, things quickly changed for the better. Today, the series spans over several different timelines and contains twelve different anime series, over eighty video games, and fourteen films. Since Gundam had such a profound effect on the mecha genre, it should be no surprise that there are a plethora of different figures and models that recreate the many different characters and mechas that appear throughout the series. Out of the wide variety of figures and models, some of the most popular include the “Robot Spirits Evolution-Spec Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam Crossbone Gundam X1/X1 Kai”, the “NXEdge Style Gundam Sentinel Gundam Mk-V”, and the “Robot Spirits Mobile Suit Gundam Gelgoog Char’s Custom Ver. A.N.I.M.E.”.

The Gundam Series Story

The Mobile Suit Gundam series is set in a futuristic setting where humans have colonized space and have advanced technologies that resulted in the creation of Mobile Suits, giant mechas that are capable of space travel and combat. The main plot focuses on the conflicts between the Earth Federation and the space colonies led by the Principality of Zeon. The protagonist of the series is Amuro Ray, a young man who shows incredible skill when piloting his Mobile Suit. He fights against the antagonist Char Aznable, a Captain of the Principality of Zeon.

The Gundam Series Development

The original Mobile Suit Gundam series was produced by Studio Sunrise and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino. It was first aired on television in April 1979. Although the series was set to have a 52 episode run, Mobile Suit Gundam initially received poor ratings, leading to sponsors cutting the run-time down to 39 episodes. Staff working on the series, however, was able to negotiate a small extension, resulting in a total of 43 episodes. When Bandai took over the rights to manufacture toys for the series, however, the series began to start developing a fan base, as fans much preferred the higher quality, articulated Gunpla to the previous toys made by Clover. The eventual success of Mobile Suit Gundam eventually led to the production of a sequel series titled Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, which was aired on television in 1985 and 1986.
