Synopsis

Sakura Adachi and Hougetsu Shimamura are two high school slackers who happen to meet and form a friendship one day during skipping class. From then on they become inseparable and happily do everything together, whether it’s playing ping pong, skipping class together, or just hanging out. As they spend time together and grow closer, their relationship begins to change as they begin to realize their friendship is more than just a friendship and that they have romantic feelings for one another.

Background

Adachi and Shimamura is an anime adaptation of the yuri light novel series of the same name by author Hitoma Iruma and illustrator Non. The anime was first announced in May 2019 and is being directed by Satoshi Kuwabara with Keiichiro Ochi handling series composition, Shizue Kaneko adapting Non’s original character designs for animation, and Natsumi Tabuchi, Hanae Nakamura, and Miki Sakurai composing the music. It is being produced by Tezuka Productions. The anime will premiere in Japan on Oct. 8 on TBS and Oct. 9 on BS11. It will be streamed in North America by Funimation.

Characters

Sakura Adachi (Voiced by: Akari Kito)
Sakura is a first-year high school student and a rebel who often ditches class. She has beautiful looks and a cold personality. She works part-time at a Chinese restaurant and lives with her mother, though they have a somewhat strained relationship. She meets Shimamura while skipping class one day and though she wants to get closer to her, she has trouble expressing her emotions and socializing.

Hougetsu Shimamura (Voiced by: Miku Ito)
Hougetsu is a first-year student who sometimes ditches class, but not as often as Sakura. After meeting Sakura they often skip class together. She thinks that dating is troublesome but that it has its good points as well. She has a younger sister who is in elementary school. She is often called “Shima-chan” by Tarumi.

Akira Hino (Voiced by: Manami Numakura)
Akira is Hougetsu’s classmate and friend. She comes from a good family and is the youngest child with four older brothers. She is in good shape and enjoys fishing.

Taeko Nagafuji (Voiced by: Reina Ueda)
Taeko is a childhood friend of Akira’s since kindergarten and she is classmates and friends with Hougetsu. She often worries about attracting attention from guys due to her large chest. Her family owns a butcher shop.

Yashiro Chikama (Voiced by: Iori Saeki)
Though she has the appearance of an elementary school girl, Yashiro claims to be a 670-year-old astronaut from the future. She wears a space suit and is a self-proclaimed alien and psychic. After meeting Hougetsu at the fishing pond, she takes a liking to her and starts to follow her around.

Tarumi
Tarumi is Hougetsu’s friend from elementary school. She lost touch with Hougetsu when they went to separate junior high schools, but she hopes to reconnect with her now that they are attending the same high school together.
