Synopsis
A war has raged for centuries between the scientifically advanced Empire and the Nebulis Sovereignty - the Paradise for Witches, and there is no end in sight. However, history will be changed when Iska, the "Successor of Black Steel" from the Empire, has a chance encounter with Aliceliese, the "Ice Calamity Witch" from Nebulis. Though sworn enemies, they both want to end the war for their own personal reasons. Now, their ideals will clash as they try to change the world in their own special way.
Background
Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World began as a light novel series written by Kei Sazane and illustrated by Ao Nekonabe that has been published by Fujimi Shobo since May 2017 under their Fujimi Fantasia Bunko label. A manga adaptation by Kei and okama is also serialized in Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine.
The anime adaptation was first announced in October 2019 during the "Fantasia Bunko Dai Kanshasai 2019" event. The series is being animated by Silver Link with Mirai Minato and Shin Onuma directing, Kent Shimoyama writing the script, Kaori Sato adapting Ao’s character designs to animation, and Elements Garden composing the music. The anime premiered in Japan on Oct. 7 on AT-X and other channels. Funimation is streaming the series in North America and British Isles, while AnimeLab is streaming it in Australia and New Zealand.
Characters
Iska (Voiced by: Yusuke Kobayashi)
Iska is 16 years old and is the youngest boy in history to receive the “St. Apostle,” the empire’s highest title for military achievement. He is soft and mild-mannered though ready to stand up for what he believes in. He fights to bring an end to the long-standing war. He wields a special double-edged sword called the “Star Blade.”
Aliceliese Lou Nebulis IX (Voiced by: Sora Amamiya)
Aliceliese is 17 years old and is the Second Princess of the Nebulis Sovereignty. She is feared as the “Ice Calamity Witch” due to being a powerful ice astral elementaler. Though ruthless on the battlefield, she is actually sensitive and compassionate at heart. Her goal for overthrowing the Empire is to create a world without oppression or persecution.
Nene Alkastone (Voiced by: Kaori Ishihara)
Nene is a skilled mechanical engineer and member of N07 Unit along with Iska. She is highly adept at handling any kind of weapon or machine and is also known for her outstanding research. She is cheerful, kind, and charming. She has a habit of calling Iska “bro.”
Mismis Klass (Voiced by: Nao Shiraki)
Mismis is the commander of N07 Unit. Though weak at direct combat, she is a very capable leader who respects her squad members and inspires the best in them. Though 22 years old, she has an innocent appearance and tends to act and speak in a childlike way.
Jhin Syulargun (Voiced by: Shunichi Toki)
Jhin is N07 Unit’s resident sniper. He is cool and composed in any situation. Though blunt and bad-mouthed, he is thoughtful of his squadmates and is well liked for his friendliness. He has known Iska for a while, as they both trained under the same tutor.
Risya In Empire (Voiced by: Ayana Taketatsu)
Risya is the Fifth Seat of the St. Apostles and serves as the special counsel to the Defence Council. Though a prodigy in a number of fields, she is down to earth and friendly.
Rin Vispose (Voiced by: Yumiri Hanamori)
Rin is Aliceliese’s aide and maid. She is an Earth astral elementaler and an excellent fighter skilled in martial arts. She can expertly assess any situation and is even skilled in assassination techniques. She is committed to and idolizes Aliceliese, but her whimsical behavior sometimes gets on her nerves.
Sisbell Lou Nebulis IX (Voiced by: Azumi Waki)
Sisbell is the Third Prinvess of the Nebulis Sovereignty and an astral mage about to create auditory and visual illusions. As a kid, she was feisty and competitive with Aliceliese, but she has since become a bit of a hermit and tends to remain by herself away from others.
Millavair Lou Nebulis VIII (Voiced by: Aya Hisakawa)
Millavair is the current Queen of the Nebulis Sovereignty and the mother of Elletear, Aliceliese, and Sisbell.
Nameless (Voiced by: Jun Kasama)
Nameless is the Eighth Seat of the St. Apostles and an assassin who wears optical camouflage to hide his identity. He is unmatched in combat and will mercilessly execute his mission, no matter what or who gets in his way.
