Synopsis

A disgraced former soldier who survived the Russo-Japanese war of the Meiji era, Saichi Sugimoto now lives on the far northern island of Japan, Hokkaido. Nicknamed “The Immortal” during the war, Sugimoto ekes out a living traversing the wilderness seeking out riches from the gold rush. After learning of a thief who stole gold from a group of Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, and hid directions to it in the tattoos of 24 inmates’ bodies, Sugimoto sets out to track down the escaped convicts aided by a young Ainu girl named Asirpa whose father was killed by the thief. Together, they battle the elements as they struggle to survive against wildlife and those who are also after the treasure.

Background

The historical adventure series Golden Kamuy began as a manga series written and illustrated by Satoru Noda. It has been published by Shueisha since August 2014 under their Young Jump Comics label and is serialized in the magazine Weekly Young Jump. As of February 2018, 12 collected tankobon volumes have been published in Japanese. The series is also published in English by VIZ Media under their VIZ Signature imprint and in Spanish by Milky Way Ediciones. To date, three volumes have been released in English. In 2016, the series won the Manga Taisho Award and placed second in the male category of the “Kono Manga ga Sugoi!” rankings.

The third season of the anime adaptation is being directed by Hitoshi Nanba with series composition by Noboru Takagi, character designs by Kenichi Onuki, and music by Kenichiro Suehiro. The anime premiered in Japan on Oct. 5 on Tokyo MX, YTV, Sapporo TV, and BS11 and is being streamed overseas by Crunchyroll.

Characters

Saichi Sugimoto (Voiced by: Chikahiro Kobayashi)
A disgraced war veteran who served in the 1st Division of the Imperial Japanese Army and fought in the battle of 203 Hill during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904. He was nicknamed “The Immortal” on the battlefield and was feared for his savage fighting style and amazing toughness.

Asirpa (Voiced by: Haruka Shiraishi)
An Ainu girl who joins Sugimoto in search of the thief who killed her father after saving Sugimoto from a wild bear attack. Her Japanese name is Asuko Kochoube.

Yoshitake Shiraishi (Voiced by: Kentaro Ito)
Known as the “Escape King” for breaking out of every prison he was ever put into, Yoshitake Shiraishi is one of the Abashiri convicts who travels with Sugimoto. He has part of the map to the Ainu gold tattooed on his body.

Lieutenant Tsurumi (Voiced by: Houchu Ohtsuka)
An officer in the 7th Division of the Imperial Japanese Army, Tsurumi is in search of the hidden Ainu treasure in order to separate Hokkaido from the rest of Japan as its own independent country. Because of Japan’s treatment of its soldiers after the war, and not extracting any remuneration from Russia, he has a strong hatred for the Japanese government.

Hyakunosuke Ogata (Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda)
Former Superior Private of the 7th Division and an ace sniper, Ogata is a member of Hijikata’s group who later joins Sugimoto’s group.

Genjiro Tanigaki (Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya)
Private First Class of the 7th Division and a Matagi of Tohoku, Genjiro goes on a warpath to avenge the death of his little sister Fumi, putting his family and heritage on the line. Now with a renewed sense of purpose, Genjiro has made it his mission to repay the Ainu people, who previously sheltered and took care of him during the war, by escorting Asirpa back home so she can reunite with her family.

Toshizou Hijikata (Voiced by: Joji Nakata)
Former member of the Shinsengumi, Toshizou is also one of the Abashiri Convicts with part of the map to the Ainu gold tattooed on his body. Though he is old, he’s skilled in combat and ambitious. Once he finds the gold, he plans to become the leader of Hokkaido and establish it as a country separated from Japan.

Tatsuma Ushiyama (Voiced by: Kenji Nomura)
Known as “Ushiyama the Undefeated,” Tatsuma is one of the Abashiri Convicts with part of the map to the Ainu gold tattooed on his body. He is a master in Judo and can’t help but try to get with every beautiful woman he comes across. He was imprisoned for the death of his former master and severely injuries several of his peers after they ganged up on him for sleeping with his former master’s wife. He’s searching for the gold alongside Toshizou.

Ienaga (Voiced by: Sayaka Ohara)
One of the Abashiri Convicts with part of the map to the Ainu gold tattooed on her body, Ienaga is a lover of art through and through. She has joined Toshizou in his search for the gold.

Shinpachi Nagakura (Voiced by: Takayuki Sugou)
A Shinsengumi captain, Shinpachi served alongside Toshizou in the Shinsengumi back in the day. Shinpachi is fond of Toshizou since he used to watch over him when he acted reckless and found trouble again and again. He’s searching for the gold alongside Toshizou.

Inkarmat (Voiced by: Mamiko Noto)
Her name means “the woman who sees.” Inkarmat is an Ainu and a skilled fortune-teller who first met Asirpa’s father when she was a child. Though she can be considered sly and selfish, she does care for close friends and the future of her people. Dressed in traditional Ainu garb, Inkarmat has a mysterious aura and sharp, mischievous eyes.

Kouhei Nikaido (Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita)
Private First Class of the 7th Division, Kouhei is fueled by his desire for revenge against Saichi for the death of his twin brother, Youhei.

Hajime Tsukishima (Voiced by: Eiji Takemoto)
Sergeant of the 7th Division, Hajime serves under Tsurumi. Though his past is stained by the murder of his father and his missing love, he can be considered the ideal soldier: serious, dutiful, polite, capable, and loyal.

Kiroranke (Voiced by: Masaki Terasoma)
A veteran of the 7th Division whose true identity is Yulbars, a Tatar with Karafuto Ainu ancestry, Kiroranke is a revolutionary who assassinated Alexander II with Wilk at the age of 15. He wants to use the gold to carry out an invasion of Hokkaido.

Tokishige Usami (Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka)
Tokishige is a superior private in the 7th Division who has undying loyalty to Tsurumi.

Otonoshin Koito (Voiced by: Katsuyuki Konishi)
Otonoshin is a second lieutenant in the 7th Division from Satsuma. His father is navy rear admiral Heiji Koito. Though intelligent, he is quite inexperienced.

Kazuo Henmi (Voiced by: Toshihiko Seki)
Kazuo is a serial killer with masochistic tendencies.

Yasaku Edogai (Voiced by: Yuma Uchida)
Yasaku is employed by Tsurumi and is a taxidermist who secretly preserves human bodies.

Maiharu Gansoku (Voiced by: Kenta Miyake)
Maiharu is a martial artist specializing in Russian stenka fighting who escaped to the island of Sakhalin.

Huci (Voiced by: Miyuki Ichijo)
Asirpa’s grandmother, Huci raised her after her parents died.

Cikapasi (Voiced by: Akeno Watanabe)
Cikapasi is an orphaned Ainu boy who travels with Tanigaki and Inkarmat.

Enonoka is a Karafuto Ainu girl.
