Synopsis

Ino Sakura is a first-year high school student who moves to Tokyo to pursue her dream of becoming an idol. There, she joins the Nezumi Dorm, a dorm for dropout idols that includes a former child actor named Roko, a musician named Hayu, and a model named Nina. But as soon as she arrives she learns that it’s going to be demolished! Now it’s up to Sakura and the girls to form an idol group called Fruit Tart and step into the spotlight to save their dorm!

Background

Dropout Idol Fruit Tart began as a four-panel manga series by So Hamayumiba that is serialized in Houbunsha’s seinen manga magazine Manga Time Kirara Carat. The anime adaptation was announced in the May issue of the magazine published in March 2019. It is being directed by Keiichiro Kawaguchi with series composition by Keiichiro Kawaguchi and Tatsuya Takahashi, character designs by Sumie Kinoshita, music by Ryuichi Takada and MONACA, and animation production by Feel. It was originally scheduled to premiere in July 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The series will now premiere on Oct. 12 in Japan on AT-X, Tokyo MX, Sun TV, and other channels. It will be streamed by Funimation as episodes air in Japan.

Characters

Ino Sakura (Voiced by: Hiyori Nitta)
Ino moves to Tokyo to pursue her dream of becoming an idol. She is a first-year student at Koganei Private Academy. Her favorite genre of music is pop. After joining Nezumi Dorm, she becomes the lyricist of Fruit Tart. She grew up on a farm and is good at cooking.

Roko Sekino (Voiced by: Risa Kubota)
Roko is a second-year student at Koganei Chuo Private High School and used to be a child actor for 10 years. Her favorite genre of music is rakugo. She is the leader of Fruit Tart and the group’s choreographer. She is the oldest of the group and takes care of the others. She also has a complex about her short height and small chest and is often mistaken for a child.

Hayu Nukui (Voiced by: Haruka Shiraishi)
Hayu is a first-year student at Koganei Private Academy and Ino’s classmate. She comes from a rich family and has a cheerful personality. Her favorite genre of music is rock. She composes the music for Fruit Tart.

Nina Maehara (Voiced by: Reina Kondo)
Nina is a second-year student at Koganei Chuo Private High School and is Roko’s classmate. Her favorite genre of music is ballads. She is the costume designer of Fruit Tart. From a young age she enjoyed making clothes as a hobby but she couldn’t wear them because she grew too fast.

Hemo Midori (Voiced by: Kyoka Moriya)
Hemo is a third-year student in junior high. Her hobby is writing poetry. She has a fear of men. Like Ino, she too dreams of becoming an idol. She was previously an idol with Cat Pro but transferred to Rat Pro in order to join Fruit Tart.

Hoho Kajino (Voiced by: Yoko Hikasa)
Hoho is the 25-year-old manager of Fruit Tart. She works hard to make the group a success including planning, photography, and editing. She also works on the side doing FX work. Because she works so much she often doesn’t have much time to sleep.

Chiko Sekino (Voiced by: Kaoru Sakura)
Chiko is 15 years old and a third-year student in junior high. She is the leader of the idol group Cream Anmitsu. She is Roko’s younger sister, though she is taller than Roko, and she has a love for her sister that borders on being a sister complex.

Nua Nakamachi (Voiced by: Yu Sasahara)
Nua is a 17-year-old second-year student at Koganei Chuo Private High School. She is a fan of Roko’s from back when she was acting, which prompted her to pursue becoming an idol. She has a harsh personality but is also shy and masochistic.

Rua Nakamachi (Voiced by: Takako Tanaka)
Rua is 17-year-old second-year student at Koganei Chuo Private High School and the twin sister of Nua. Unlike her sister, she has a friendly, laid-back personality, but also has an angry, sadistic side.

Riri Higashi (Voiced by: Rena Maeda)
Riri is the 25-year-old producer of Cream Anmitsu. She works for Cat Pro and was promoted to producer in less than three years. She enjoys cosplay as a hobby and owns countless outfits. She has a lighthearted, kind personality and is always smiling.

Oto Kogane (Voiced by: Yui Horie)
Oto is the 19-year-old president and heiress of Cat Pro. She has a childlike appearance and normally behaves in a childish way, though she graduated from an American university. Her hobby is cosplay.

Tone Honmachi (Voiced by: Yuiko Tatsumi)
Tone is Ino and Hayu’s classmate. She belongs to the chorus club and is good at singing. She becomes a fan of Fruit Tart after seeing them perform live, and she later becomes the group’s assistant.
