Synopsis

Nagomu Irino moved to the big city of Tokyo to pursue his dream of becoming a musician, but when his father falls ill, he returns home and decides to take over his family’s wagashi shop, Ryokusho. However, there is another candidate for the shop’s successor: a young girl named Itsuka Yukihira who lives with the Irino family and works at Ryokusho as the shop’s poster girl. Nagomu is entrusted to be Itsuka’s mentor, but Itsuka treats him coldly due to him once declining to take over the shop. But before long, he begins to see a different side to her…

Background

Deaimon began as a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Rin Asano that started serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace seinen manga magazine in May 2016. As of October 2021, it has been published in 12 collected tankobon volumes under the Kadokawa Comics Ace imprint.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in April 2021. It is being produced by studio Encourage Films (A Centaur's Life, Hitorijime My Hero, Love Rice) and features Fumitoshi Oizaki (Aokana: Four Rhythm Across the Blue, Etotama, Place to Place) as director, with Reiko Yoshida (Bakuman, Blue Period, Girls und Panzer) handling series composition, Sakae Shibuya (Is the Order a Rabbit? BLOOM, Isekai Cheat Magician, Magical Girl Site) credited as character designer and chief animation director, and Ren Takada composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Sumire" by Maaya Sakamoto, and the ending theme song is "Koko ni Aru Yakusoku" by Deaimon. The anime will premiere in Japan on April 6, 2022 AT-X, Tokyo MX, and KBS Kyoto.

Characters

Nagomu Irino (Voiced by: Nobunaga Shimazaki)
Nagomu moved to Tokyo to pursue his dream of becoming a musician, but when his father is hospitalized, he returns home and decides to take over his family’s candy shop, Ryokusho. He loves Japanese candy and works as an apprentice. He is a good-natured person and a hard worker.

Itsuka Yukihira (Voiced by: Kozue Yuki)
Itsuka is a 10-year-old girl who lives with the Irino family and is the poster girl for Ryokusho. Due to her work ethic, she is recognized by Nagomu’s father as the rightful heir to the candy shop and she plans to take it over one day. She sees Nagomu, who returns home suddenly, as her rival.

Heigo Irino (Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama)
Heigo is Nagomu’s father and the owner of Ryokusho. He sees Itsuka as his rightful heir and treats her lovingly as if she were his own daughter.

Fuki Irino (Voiced by: Sayaka Ohara)
Fuki is Nagomu’s mother and the proprietress of Ryokusho. She worries about Itsuka due to her rigidity and asks Nagomu to be her mentor.

Masa Tatsumi (Voiced by: Hiroshi Iwasaki)
Masa is a veteran confectioner of Japanese candy who works at Ryokusho. He calls Nagomu “Bocchan.”

Otsuru-san (Voiced by: Satsuki Yukino)
Otsuru-san is an employee at Ryokusho and runs the teahouse together with Fuki.

Saki Seto (Voiced by: Takuma Nagatsuka)
Saki is a young confectioner who works at Ryokusho. He has concerns about taking over his family’s manju shop.

Mitsuru Horikawa (Voiced by: Minori Suzuki)
Mitsuru is a high school student who works part-time at Ryokusho. She is good with her hands and takes care of her younger brothers in place of her parents. Her hobby is music and she likes to upload videos online while hiding her face.

Kanoko Matsukaze (Voiced by: Minami Takahashi)
Kanako is Nagomu’s ex-girlfriend who breaks up with him over him deciding to take over his family’s shop. She quits her job and moves to Kyoto.

Hiiro Kisaichi (Voiced by: Saori Hayami)
Hiiro is a graduate of Ecole de Patisserie de Tokyo who comes to Ryokusho to study as an apprentice. She’s a perfectionist.

Tomoe Yukihira (Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka)
Tomoe is Itsuka’s father. He is a musician who came to Ryokusho through a friend but disappeared and left Itsuka behind.
