Synopsis

Izumi and his girlfriend Shikimori are high school sweethearts. They are always lovey-dovey when they’re together, and Shikimori seems like the perfect girlfriend: cute, sweet, and full of affection. But when Izumi gets into trouble, as he has a tendency to do, she does a complete 180 and becomes the ultimate cool heroine! A high school love comedy between this cute power couple and their friends begins!

Background

Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie began as a Japanese romcom manga series by Keigo Maki that started as a manga on Twitter before beginning serialization on Kodansha's Magazine Pocket website and app in February 2019. As of January 2022, 11 collected tankobon volumes have been published under the KC Deluxe label. It was ranked fifth in the web comic category of the Next Manga Award. As of April 2021, it has sold over 2.1 million copies. The manga is also licensed for English release in North America by Kodansha USA, who have published eight tankobon volumes as of January 2022.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in January 2021. It is being produced by Doga Kobo and features Ryota Itoh as director and Shohei Yamanaka as assistant director, with Yoshimi Narita handling series composition and Ai Kikuchi handling character designs. YouTube singer Nasuo☆ is performing the opening theme song, and Yuki Nakashima is performing the ending theme song. The anime will premiere in Japan on April 9, 2022 during the ANiMAZiNG!!! Programming block on Asahi Broadcasting, TV Asahi, and its affiliates. It will be streamed outside of Asia through Crunchyroll.

Characters

Shikimori (Voiced by: Saori Onishi)
Shikimori is a second-year high school student dating Izumi. She is normally a very cute and kind girl, but she has an unexpected side around Izumi. She’s in love with Izumi. She has excellent grades, though they aren’t as high as Izumi’s. Her first name is unknown, but Kyo calls her “Micchon” and Izumi’s parents call her “Micchan.” Though she tries to make Izumi bentos for lunch, she is a terrible cook.

Izumi (Voiced by: Shuichiro Umeda)
Izumi is a second-year high school student dating Shikimori. He has terrible luck and is the type to often get roped into trouble, but no matter what bad luck comes his way, he always keeps a positive attitude. He’s in love with Shikimori. He is an excellent student and ranks fifth overall in his grade. His first name is unknown, but his parents call him “Yu.” He often helps his parents around the house and is a competent cook, especially when it comes to making desserts.

Kyo Nekozaki (Voiced by: Misato Matsuoka)
Kyo is one of Shikimori’s friends and classmates. She is a cheerful, lively, and athletic girl and has a friendly personality. She is supportive of Izumi and Shikimori’s relationship and likes to sometimes tease them. Shikimori calls her “Neko.”

Yui Hachimitsu (Voiced by: Rina Hidaka)
Yui is one of Shikimori’s friends and classmates. She is an expressionless girl who goes at her own pace and is very observant. She enjoys indoor activities and is bad at sports.

Shu Inuzuka (Voiced by: Nobuhiko Okamoto)
Shu is one of Izumi’s friends and classmates. He is frank, energetic, and likes to goof around, but he’s also serious in his studies who has an aversion to slacking off and always stays true to himself. He sees Shikimori as his rival.
