Synopsis

Haruka’s love of swimming continues, but what will he grasp at the end of it all? Bonding with friends through swimming, and the irreplaceable days that followed. Their swimming charmed viewers, scooped up their hearts, and created miracles time and again. Eventually, the boys became young men, and each one set out on their own path. With all their feelings in their hearts, they now take on the world stage. All the while, Haruka continues to ask the question: Why do we swim? Together with his friends, he swims onward, toward the unknown future that awaits him.

Background

Free! The Final Stroke - Part 2 is the final chapter of the two-part film project Free! The Final Stroke and the series’ sixth film. It is once again being produced by Kyoto Animation and features Eisaku Kawanami as director, with Eisaku Kawanami handling series composition and screenplay, Futoshi Nishiya handling character designs, and Tatsuya Kato composing the music. The film will be released theatrically in Japan on April 22, 2022

Characters

Haruka Nanase (Voiced by: Nobunaga Shimazaki)
Specialty: Freestyle
Haruka is a strong but quiet stoic who has a hard time communicating his feelings. He loves the water and has a swimming style that captivates others. He quits competitive swimming after having a falling out with his childhood friend, Rin, whom he thinks quit swimming because of him. He regains his passion for swimming when he learns of Rin’s return to the sport.

Makoto Tachibana (Voiced by: Tatsuhisa Suzuki)
Specialty: Backstroke
Haruka’s childhood friend and a fellow teammate on the Iwatobi Swim Club, Makoto is outgoing and friendly, and knows Haruka extremely well. He has been afraid of deep water ever since an incident in his childhood in which a fisherman he idolized drowned in a typhoon.

Rin Matsuoka (Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano)
Specialty: Butterfly/Freestyle
A second-year student at Samezuka Academy, Rin swam with Haruka in elementary school and traveled to Australia to study and train before returning to Japan and enrolling at Samezuka. He joins his school’s swim team after a reunion race against Haruka, whom he now views as his rival. His goal is to become an Olympic swimmer.

Ikuya Kirishima (Voiced by: Kouki Uchiyama)
Specialty: Breaststroke
Nasuya’s younger brother, Ikuya is muscular though small-framed. He was a member of the swim team at Iwatobi Junior High along with Haruka and Makoto. After the junior high team disbands, he travels to the U.S. with Natsuya where he attends high school and continues swimming in the hopes of becoming an individual medley competitor.

Asahi Shiina (Voiced by: Toshiyuki Toyonaga)
Specialty: Butterfly
Energetic with a bright and vibrant personality, Asahi recruits Haruka and Makoto onto the middle school team along with Ikuya. After his first year, he moves to Kyushu and becomes the captain of the swim team at Kazami High School.

Nagisa Hazuki (Voiced by: Tsubasa Yonaga)
Specialty: Breaststroke
Cheerful with a bright personality, Nagisa is outspoken and has no trouble expressing himself. A third-year student at Iwatobi High School, he has admired Haruka since elementary school and joins the Iwatobi Swim Team in the hopes of being able to swim with him again.

Rei Ryugazaki (Voiced by: Daisuke Hirakawa)
Specialty: Butterfly
A third-year student at Iwatobi High School and Nagisa’s classmate, Rei is logical and intelligent. Prior to joining the swim team he was a pole vaulter on the track team but always over-analyzed his jumps and had poor performance. Though at first reluctant to join the swim team, he agrees after seeing Haruka’s swimming.

Hiyori Tono (Voiced by: Ryohei Kimura)
Specialty: Butterfly
A first-year student at Shimogami University, Hiyori attended high school in the U.S., where he met and became friends with Ikuya. He is asked by Natsuya to look after Ikuya during his travels due to his fragile health, which puts a strain on their relationship.

Sosuke Yamazaki (Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya)
Specialty: Butterfly
A childhood friend of Rin’s who went to elementary school together, Sosuke understands Rin better than anyone. He is reserved and quiet but kind. He doesn’t like Haruka but tolerates him due to his ability to motivate Rin.

Natsuya Kirishima (Voiced by: Kenji Nojima)
Specialty: Freestyle
Ikuya’s older brother, Natsuya is boisterous, upbeat, and kind. He was the captain of the Iwatobi Junior High Swim Club. He travels to the U.S. to attend high school, after which time he decides to compete individually all over the world.

Nao Serizawa (Voiced by: Satoshi Hino)
Specialty: Butterfly
Close friends with Natsuya, Nao is gentle, soft-spoken, and logical. He was a member of the Iwatobi Junior High Swim Club until an eye injury temporarily sidelines him. Unable to continue swimming, he enters into coaching and pursuing a career in sports medicine.

Aiichiro Nitori (Voiced by: Kouki Miyata)
Specialty: Breaststroke
A third-year student at Samezuka Academy, Aiichiro is friendly and talkative, sometimes too much so. He has idolized Rin ever since seeing him swim during a competition in elementary school and wants to specialize in two styles like he does.

Momotaro Mikoshiba (Voiced by: Kenichi Suzumura)
Specialty: Backstroke
A second-year student at Samezuka Academy, Momotaro is Seijuro and Isuzu’s younger brother and has a happy-go-lucky personality. Initially, he doesn’t join the swim team, but later does after Rin’s insistence. He has a crush on Gou. He is given the nickname "The Sea of Japan's Sea Otter” due to his swimming ability.

Kisumi Shigino (Voiced by: Chihiro Suzuki)
Kisumi was classmates with Haruka and Makoto during junior high and was also a member of the school’s basketball team. He attends a different high school than the others but works with Makoto to teach his younger brother, Hayato, how to swim.

Gou Matsuoka (Voiced by: Akeno Watanabe)
Rin’s younger sister, Gou is a third-year student at Iwatobi High and joins the swim team as their manager. Though easygoing and friendly, as the team’s manager she is strict but supportive. She has a fascination with muscles and often can’t help but blush or get overly excited when she sees them. Though the team’s manager, she doesn’t know how to swim.

Romio Hayafune (Voiced by: Atsushi Abe)
A first-year student at Iwatobi High, Romio joins the Iwatobi High Swim Club after Haruka and Makoto leave for college. He was born in the U.S. but moves to Tokyo before attending Iwatobi. A freestyle swimmer, he has anxiety over making a false start during a middle school competition.

Shizuru Isurugi (Voiced by: Yoshitsugu Matsuoka)
A first-year student at Iwatobi High, Shizuru also joins the swim team after Haruka and Makoto leave for college. He is often expressionless and tired looking and suffers from severe motion sickness.

Ayumu Kunikida (Voiced by: Ryo Hirohashi)
A soft-spoken girl who can be blunt and honest to a fault, Ayumu joins the Iwatobi High Swim Club to train to become the club’s manager to succeed Gou. Unlike Gou, she doesn’t care for muscles and prefers a bit of chub.

Seijuro Mikoshiba (Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda)
A skilled swimmer with an enthusiastic personality and a weakness for cute girls, Seijuro was the captain of Samezuka Academy’s swim team until his graduation. He falls in love with Gou upon first meeting her.

Ryuji Azuma (Voiced by: Takeshi Kusao)
Haruka’s swim coach, Ryuji is an alumnus of Iwatobi High and used to be a member of the swim team as well as a top competitive swimmer. His competitive career comes to an end after a certain incident.

Mikhail Makarovich Nitori (Voiced by: Hidenobu Kiuchi)
A former Russian competitive swimmer and a long-time rival of Ryuji’s, Mikhail is a coach with an eye for up-and-coming talent and chooses who he will train based on their musculature. Like Gou, he has a fascination with muscles. He is Rin’s coach in Australia.

Albert Volandel (Voiced by: Jeff Manning)
A swimmer from Sweden who holds the world record in both 100 and 200 meter freestyle. Haruka meets Albert at a special training camp without realizing who he is and the two become friends. He admires Haruka’s powerful swimming style.
