Synopsis

In his past life, he was the all-powerful Demon Lord Varvatos. But after years of feeling lonely, he casts a reincarnation spell on himself while on the verge of death so that he can lead a normal life and is reincarnated as a villager named Ard several thousand years later. But with all his memories of his past life and his limitless magical abilities still intact, living a normal life is going to prove more difficult than he thought!

Background

The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody started as a Japanese light novel series written by Myojin Kato and illustrated by Sao Mizuno that began being published on the user-generated novel publishing site Shosetsuka ni Naro in August 2017. In May the following year, the series was picked up by Fujimi Shobo, who have been publishing it under their Fujimi Fantasia Bunko imprint. As of April 2021, nine volumes have been published. The light novel is being licensed in English in North America by Yen Press.

A manga adaptation illustrated by ​​Misuho Kotoba began serialization in Square Enix’s Monthly Big Ganganseinen manga magazine in February 2019 and has been published in five collected tankobon volumes under their Big Gangan Comics imprint as of September 2021.

A TV anime adaptation was announced in March 2021 at the "Kadokawa Light Novel Expo 2020" event. It is being jointly produced by animation studios BLADE and SILVER LINK and features Mirai Minato as director and Yushi Ibe as assistant director, with Michiko Yokote handling series composition, Takayuki Noguchi handling character designs, Yoshihiro Watanabe handling sub-character designs, and Takeshi Nakatsuka composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is “Be My Friend!!!” by Ayaka Ohashi. The anime will premiere in Japan in April 2022 and will be streamed overseas through Crunchyroll.

In his past life, Ard was the all-powerful Demon Lord Varvatos who, after years of being alone, casts a reincarnation spell on himself and is reincarnated as a normal villager several thousand years later. Now, he finds himself in a world where magic has declined, but he has retained his extraordinary magic power from his previous life.Though serious, kind, and gentlemanly, due to his immense power, people tend to keep their distance from him, and he has been having trouble making friends.

Ireena Litz de Olhyde (Voiced by: Wakana Maruoka)
Ireena is an elf girl whose father is a great hero. She has known Ard since childhood and is his one and only friend. She has an overflowing righteousness, is rather prideful, and hates to lose. On the other hand, she also has a lonely side. Before meeting Ard, she ran away from forming relationships with people for some reason.

Ginny Fin de Salvan (Voiced by: Hina Yomiya)
Ginny is a succubus girl attending the magic academy. In addition to having a glamorous body, she has an Evil Eye that allows her to charm and manipulate others. Though lacking self-confidence due to being bullied, deep down she has an alluring personality befitting a succubus. She is in love with Ard and works toward creating a harem for him.

Sylphy Marheaven (Voiced by: Ayaka Ohashi)
Sylphy fought alongside Varvatos in ancient times, but carelessly lost track of time and spent thousands of years training in a dungeon where time moves differently. After that, she comes to the magic academy in search of the reincarnated demon lord.

Olivia vel Vine (Voiced by: Mie Sonozaki)
Olivia is a former member of the Demon Lord Army’s Four Heavenly Kings. She has spent the last several thousand years searching for the demon lord. She currently works as a special instructor at the magic academy. She is a strict teacher who assesses her students’ abilities. After witnessing Ard’s limitless magical power, she begins to suspect that he is the reincarnated demon lord.
