Synopsis

Having withstood the defensive battle at Jaburo, the Earth Federation Forces are planning to launch a full-scale counterattack operation to capture Odessa, the home base of Zeon's Earth Attack Force. Amuro, aboard White Base, sets off for Belfast to resupply before the operation. On route, White Base receives a mission: to clear out the remaining enemies on an uninhabited island known as the "Island of No Return.” Amuro and his crew embark on a search for the remaining enemies, but upon scouring the island, they are surprised to find children living there and a lone Zaku. A battle ensues in which Amuro loses his Gundam and is saved by a man who calls himself Cucuruz Doan. Can Amuro uncover the secret of the island, find his Gundam again, and escape to safety?

Background

Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island is an upcoming animated film in the massive Gundam franchise. It is being directed by the creator of the manga, Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, and is based on the 15th episode of the original Mobile Suit Gundam anime and will serve as a retelling of the episode. During a talk event for the film, Yasuhiko expressed that the film will likely be his last time adapting Gundam to the screen. The anime is being produced by Sunrise and features Ka Hee Im as assistant director, with Toshizo Nemoto handling the screenplay, Atsushi Tamura, Tsukasa Kotobuki, and Yasuhiko handling character designs, Hajime Katoki, Kimitoshi Yamane, and Kunio Okawara handling mechanical designs, and Takayuki Hattori composing the music. The film will be released in Japan on June 3, 2022.

Characters

Cucuruz Doan (Voiced by: Shunsuke Takeuchi)
A former MS pilot in the Principality of Zeon army who now lives on an isolated island with many children and livestock for dairy farming. He became a deserter after running away with the Zaku MS he was piloting. After repairing and retrofitting his Zaku to be combat-ready, he uses it to fight both the Earth Federation Forces and the Principality of Zeon forces that approach the island. He is a skilled pilot who is capable of overwhelming even Amuro. Following an encounter with Amuro's Gundam, who came to the island to take out the remaining enemy forces, he rescues Amuro from the cockpit. He is hiding a secret on the island, and his former subordinates, the Southern Cross Corps, are trying to kill him.

Amuro Ray (Voiced by: Toru Furuya)
Amuro became a full-fledged MS pilot after he accidentally got caught up in a Zaku attack and boarded the RX-78-02 Gundam designed by his father, Tem. He grows up to be a soldier who awakens his Newtype ability through many fierce battles after being separated from his father, who went missing on Side 7, and his mother, Kamaria, whom he reunited with in North America. After the production of the prototype RGM-79 GM Gundam, he is assigned to a reconnaissance mission for White Base. He comes across former Zeon deserter Cucuruz Doan on an isolated island and loses his Gundam in the battle. His feelings for Cucuruz begin to change as he lives among the children Cucuruz is raising.

Bright Noa (Voiced by: Ken Narita)
A young captain at White Base who has been through many fierce battles. He is ordered to clean up the remaining enemies on an uninhabited island before a major counterattack operation.

Mirai Yashima (Voiced by: Satomi Arai)
The daughter of Sho Yashima, the head of the Yashima Company, who helms White Base. She was appointed as a warrant officer at Jaburo. She and Bright work well together.

Sayla Mass (Voiced by: Megumi Han)
A brilliant woman in charge of communications at White Base. Her true identity is Char's sister, and she is the daughter of the founder of the enemy nation, Zeon. She is also the pilot of the Core Booster.

Kai Shiden (Voiced by: Toshio Furukawa)
A member of White Base and the pilot of the Guncannon. Though a nihilist, he is also kind. He is the first to discover the island's children during an operation.

Hayato Kobayashi (Voiced by: Hideki Nakanishi)
A boy who got caught up in the war and boarded White Base. He boards Gunperry and Guncannon in search of Amuro, who has gone missing.

Fraw Bow (Voiced by: Misato Fukuen)
A young girl who took care of Amuro at Side 7. She lost her family in the war and joined White Base, where she is in charge of sanitation and miscellaneous tasks.

Sleggar Law (Voiced by: Tomofumi Ikezoe)
A lieutenant who was assigned to White Base after the battle to defend Jaburo. He pilots the RGM-79 GM.
