Synopsis

The Rising of the Shield Hero follows Naofumi Iwatani, a 20 year-old university student who was whisked away to a fantasy game-like realm of monsters and magic after discovering a book about Four Heroes. Iwatani is chosen as one of these four and given the mantle of the Shield Hero, which is seen as the weakest of the four. The other three were also young males summoned from worlds similar to Iwatani’s, but it was he who got the short end of the stick. The least charismatic of the bunch, only one woman joined his party, but she soon betrayed him and left him on his own. Now the cynical Iwatani must somehow survive in a new and dangerous world that despises him.

Background

The Rising of the Shield Hero began as a web novel written by Aneko Yusagi. The series was later picked up by Media Factory and published as a light novel with illustrations by Seira Minami. As of June 2019, 22 volumes have been published. The series was then released as a manga adaptation by Aiya Kyu, which was launched in Monthly Comic Flapper magazine in 2014. It has 20 collected tankobon volumes in print as of February 2022. Both the light novel and manga are licensed in North America by One Peace Books.

The Rising of the Shield Hero 2nd Season is the second season of the TV anime adaptation, which was officially announced in 2019 during Crunchyroll Expo. It is being jointly animated by DR Movie and Kinema Citrus and features Masato Jinbo as director, with Keigo Koyanagi handling series composition, Masahiro Suwa handling character designs, and Kevin Penkin composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Bring Back" by MADKID, and the ending theme song is "Yuzurenai" by Chiai Fujikawa. The anime was originally planned to premiere in October 2021 but was later delayed. It will now premiere in April 2022 and will be streamed overseas through Crunchyroll.
