Synopsis

In the aftermath of the Battle of Kankokukan, in which Qin was attacked by a combined army of five powerful countries, Ei Sei proves his talent and is crowned the 31st king of Qin. But though victorious, the battle has left a huge mark on Qin and the countries that participated, as well as all of China. Now, there are those in Qin who plan to take advantage of the chaos to start a civil war, spurring a new upheaval within the kingdom. However, Ei Sei is determined to achieve his goal of unifying China, and with the help of Shin, he takes another step toward realizing that goal.

Background

Kingdom began as a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yasuhisa Hara that has been serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Young Jump seinen manga magazine since January 2006. As of February 2022, 64 collected tankobon volumes have been published under the Young Jump Comics imprint. That same month, the series surpassed 87 million copies in print.

Several video game adaptations of the series have been released since Konami Digital Entertainment’s Kingdom: Ikki Tosen no Ken was released on the PlayStation Portable in November 2010. These include the mobile games Kingdom: Shunju Sengoku Taisen in December 2012, Kingdom: Eiyu no Keifu in March 2015, Kingdom: Seven Flags in October 2016, and Kingdom Ran: Tenka Toitsu e no Michi in February 2018.

The fourth season of the TV anime adaptation was announced at the end of the final episode of the third season in October 2021. The anime will adapt the events from after the Coalition Army Arc and is being jointly produced by Pierrot and St.Signpost. It features Kenichi Imaizumi as director, with Noboru Takagi handling series composition, Hisashi Abe handling character designs, and Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto composing the music. The anime’s opening theme song is "Rei -ray-" by Suiren, and the ending theme song is "Genyo" by Haku. The anime will premiere in Japan on April 9, 2022 on NHK General.

Characters

Shin (Voiced by: Masakazu Morita)
The General of Qin and the leader of the Hi Shin Army. Though he comes from a humble background, he aspires to become one of the greatest generals underneath the heavens. He was once involved in a coup d'état in the royal capital, and fate brought him into contact with the current king of Qin. He is straightforward and honest, and is trusted by his subordinates due to his heroic spirit. He has survived death on the battlefield many times and has honed his intuition in battle.

Ei Sei (Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama)
The 31st king of Qin. He is young, handsome, and intelligent. He has excellent leadership skills and already has the air of a king despite his young age. He is trying to end the history of warfare by unifying China, a feat no one has been able to achieve. While running the country as king, he is also engaged in a fierce power struggle with his counterpart, Ryo Fui, but his presence is only increasing due to his superior talent. Together with Shin, who fought in the coup d'état in the capital, they pledge to achieve the goals they have in mind.

Ka Ryo Ten (Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya)
The strategist of the Hi Shin Army and one of the best strategists in Qin. As a reliable military strategist, he has been a great asset in leading the Hi Shin Army to a successful advance and saving them from danger at times.

Kyo Kai (Voiced by: Yoko Hikasa)
A commander and lieutenant in the Hi Shin Army and a member of the legendary 1,000-year-old assassin clan Shiyuu. She has tremendous fighting power and boasts her unrivaled strength on the battlefield. She is dedicated to becoming a great general of Qin.

O Hon (Voiced by: Yoshimasa Hosoya)
A general of Qin and the leader of the Gyoku Hou Army belonging to the Hi Shin Army. He is a serious and hard-headed man who hates to lose, and he has a passionate fighting spirit. Through tireless effort and training, he has become the greatest spearman of his generation, having reached the level of a master.

Ryo Fui (Voiced by: Tessho Genda)
A powerful man who serves as chancellor of the State of Qin. Though he serves King Ei Sei as his aide, he secretly holds all the power. Originally from a merchant family, he is extremely ambitious and even used his girlfriend to help him rise to power, offering her to the former king of Qin. In order to secure his power within the royal court, he created a group known as the "Four Pillars of Ryo Fui."

Shohei Kun (Voiced by: Junichi Suwabe)
The current head of military affairs for the state of Qin and the leader of the Shou Hei Kun Army. He is a brilliant strategist and is considered one of the best in China. He is also in charge of approving and teaching students at the Strategist Academy, where he has trained Mou Ten, Mou Ki, and Ka Ryo Ten.
