OtapediaBio-Broly Movie - Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly is a Japanese animated fantasy and martial arts film that premiered in Japan at Toei Anime Film Fair on July 9th, 1994. It is the eleventh Dragon Ball Z feature film and is the last film to feature Broly until Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Bio-Broly is directed by Yoshihiro Ueda, written by Takao Koyama, composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi, and distributed by Toei Company.

Summary

The opening scene of the film begins with strange, muscular humanoid figures climbing out of a tank. These figures are artificially created “Bio-Warriors” created by Dr. Collie and his assistant, Nain. These two scientists are employed by Lord Jaguar, who happens to be a long-time rival of Mr. Satan. Meanwhile, Android 18 is paying a visit to Mr. Satan’s mansion. She is upset that he hasn’t paid the money he promised her for throwing their match at the last World Martial Arts Tournament. She begins wrecking his prizes and his home in an effort to get him to pay while Goten, Trunks, Krillin, and her daughter Marron cautiously wait outside.

During the struggle, Jaguar’s cousin, Men-Men stops by Mr. Satan’s house and challenges him to a formal battle on behalf of Jaguar. Although he refuses at first, Men-Men blackmails him into agreeing by threatening to reveal that he used to wet the bed to the media. Mr. Satan, Men-Men, Android 18, Goten, and Trunks go to the laboratory together while Krillin watches Marron. After arriving, Mr. Satan is entered into a tournament to fight against the Bio-Warriors. The tournament itself is fairly organized and the others are allowed to participate as well. Everyone but Mr. Satan (who “hires” Android 18 to protect him) makes quick work of the Bio-Warriors. Goten and Trunks also notice a familiar face standing next to Jaguar, the shaman from Natade Village -- where Broly was last defeated in Broly - Second Coming. After defeating the Bio-Warriors, a frustrated Jaguar reveals his trump card, a “Super Bio-Warrior”. When Goten and Trunks look at the body floating in the tank, they realize that Broly has been recreated as a Bio-Warrior after a sample of his blood was given to Jaguar by the shaman.

The two attempt to use a Kamehameha to destroy Broly before he has a chance to awaken, but Broly’s Saiyan instincts wake him from his sleep, allowing him to break out of his tank. Immediately after breaking out of containment, however, Broly is covered by a strange bio-fluid that is said to destroy any organic matter it touches. This turns Broly into “Bio-Broly”, a repulsive, brown monster made of goo with the pure rage of an angry Saiyan. Jaguar orders Bio-Broly to attack Mr. Satan, who asks 18 to defend him again for a hefty bonus. 18, however, is quickly outmatched by Bio-Broly. Jaguar claims that he is able to control Bio-Broly, but this is quickly disproven after the monster attacks him.

Dr. Collie warns that the strange liquid that fused with Broly will continue to spread throughout the entire Earth if it isn’t contained. As Mr. Satan attempts to swim away from the monster, however, everyone notices that the bio-liquid hardens after touching seawater. They attempt to flood the facility with seawater to render the threat inert and it seems to be fairly successful. The victory is short-lived, however, as a massive Bio-Broly erupts from the ocean. Everyone begins to panic, but then it seems that the seawater finally begins to take effect. Bio-Broly is now completely unable to move and Trunks, Goten, and Krillin use a Kamehameha in unison to finally put Broly to rest for good.

After the battle was finally over, Mr. Satan is still lost at sea and is desperately asking for help. Android 18 flys by and offers to help him, but only if he promises to pay her a total of 100 million Zeni. Frustrated, Mr. Satan has no choice but to continue to swim on his own.

Meanwhile, over in the Other World, Grand Kai contacts Goku and tells him that Broly is now in Hell and is causing all sorts of trouble. He recommends that Goku should take Pikkon and stop Broly from destroying Hell any further. Goku, unsurprisingly, agrees to do so, but only after he finishes his meal first.

Music

The opening theme of the movie is “WE GOTTA POWER”, which is performed by Hironobu Kageyama. The lyrics were provided by Yukinoji Mori while the music and arrangement were both handled by Keiju Ishikawa.

An insert song titled “Chisa na Senshi Goten to Trunks to Tema” was also used in the film. Vocals were provided by Susumu Oya while the lyrics were written by Yukinoji Mori. The music was composed by Tetsuji Hayashi, though the arrangement was given by Osamu Totsuka.

“Doragon Pawa Mugendai” is the name of the ending theme. Its credits are identical to the insert song, with the exception of the vocalist, who is Hironobu Kageyama.

Release

After the original Japanese release of the film, Bio-Broly was given a DVD release in North America on September 13th, 2005. The Broly Trilogy was later remastered and re-released as a set on Blu-ray and DVD on March 31st, 2009. On January 3rd, 2012, another box set that included the last four Dragon Ball Z films was released on DVD.
