The Dragon Ball video games are based on the original manga and anime series created by Akira Toriyama, some of the most recent game series have been produced for the Playstation 4 platform. These include Dragon Ball Xenoverse, Dragon Ball Fighter Z, and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Dragon Ball also features in the game “Jump Force'', which is a game published by Namco based on characters in manga series which feature the Shonen Weekly Jump, characters from Dragon Ball in Jump Force includes Goku, Vegeta, Cell, Frieza, Future Trunks, Piccolo and Boo.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse

Story and Gameplay
The game is based on a setting where the original story setting of Dragon Ball Z is altered by two villains who use time travel to change the history. Trunks who can also time travel, being a time patroller creates a wish to Shenron for a strong hero who can assist him to fight powerful enemies and restore the timeline to how it originally was.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse has a character creation setting, where the player can choose its gender, race, height, hair color etc. The created character is the fighter who will assist Trunks, and the overall campaign is to time patrol and fight the villains alongside Goku and other fighters with many other additional quests and missions. There are originally 8 arcs; Saiyan Arc, Ginyu Force Arc, Frieza Arc, Cell Game Arc, Future Android Arc, Majin Buu Arc, God of Destruction Beerus Arc and Demon God Demigra Arc.

The game is in an open-world environment with multiple 3D battle arenas with the gameplay mechanics borrowing elements from the previous games such as Budokai Tenkaichi 3D battle arenas. Dragon Ball Xenoverse also includes Dragon Ball Online which is an online role-playing game set in the Dragon Ball Universe where you are able to battle with other online characters in various modes.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2

Story and Gameplay
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 is a sequel of the first Dragon Ball Xenoverse, the timeline is based on 2 years after the Demon God Demigra Arc in the first version of the xenoverse game series. Xenoverse 2 continues the open-world setting with 3D battle areas and destructive environments, the game has a larger span of open-world free roaming. Being able to go to places such as Namekian Village and Frieza’s ship. The hero has role-playing options in dialogue which can alter the motion of the story outcome throughout the game giving more interactivity between the player and the Dragon Ball Xenoverse gameplay story.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3

Not yet released, there has been no official news or announcement regarding the release date of Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 3.

Dragon Ball Z FighterZ

Dragon Ball FighterZ is a 2D based fighting game, with inspired concepts from several other fighting games such as Street Fighters. From the initial roster of 24 characters, the player can select three characters to form a team. An individual character is controlled one at a time but the the player can freely switch characters during battle, the player also has the option to call in other characters to perform an “Assist” mode, which can be used to perform simultaneous and combo attacks.

Dragon Ball Z FighterZ involves a ranking system in its arcade and online mode, players can rank up with subsequent wins.

Reception

Over 40 million video games based on the Dragon Ball franchise have been sold by December 2014. The Dragon Ball Xenoverse series have sold a further 10 million units between 2015 and 2018, with the playstation 4 being released in late 2013, and being the largest platform base for playing the Dragon Ball Xenoverse series followed by the PC and XBOX platforms. Dragon Ball Fighter Z also had over 4 million units sold, bringing the Dragon Ball Franchise video game sales to over 54 million with respect to games played on other platforms including Dragon Ball Mobile Games.
