Dragon Ball Fighterz was developed by Arc System Works and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It is a fighting game based on the internationally popular Dragon Ball manga and anime ‘Dragon Ball’ (written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama). The series follows the adventures of the main protagonist, Son Goku, who strives to be the strongest warrior in the entire universe. The game was released on January 26, 2018, worldwide and February 1. 2018 in Japan for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. Later in September 2018, the game was released worldwide for the Nintendo Switch.

Gameplay

Dragon Ball FighterZ is a 2D fighting game with two main modes; an exclusive Story Mode and Arcade Mode. It also has thrilling online features like Fighters Lobby, Party Match, World Match and Circle Match. Players can experience aerial combos, destructible stages and famous scenes from the Dragon Ball anime reproduced in high resolution.

Story Mode

The single player campaign features an original story after the Future Trunks Arc in the Dragon Ball manga. The story involves an invasion of mysterious clones and the main antagonist, Android 21. Throughout the campaign, the player gets to play as different characters in order to complete the story. There are three Arcs in this campaign which are; Super Warrior Arc, Enemy Warrior Arc and Android 21 Arc.

Arcade Mode

Players can test themselves by playing Arcade Mode. The player can choose either a 3, 5 or 7 battle course. As the player fights through the specially themed team of fighters, a grade will be provided on the performance after each battle, which will dictate the path and the difficulty of the upcoming battle. The further the player progresses, the harder the opponent gets. The aim of this mode is to complete all the battles with a high rank.

Online Mode

Fighters Lobby - The lobby allows players from around the world to fight each other or watch other players game replay.

  • Party Match - It is a 3 vs 3 team battle. Six players are put into a random team and fight against each other.

  • World Match - The player is able to battle any player around the world. Each player has a rank and in Rank Match, players with similar ranks battle, whereas, in Casual Match players can fight anyone.

  • Circle Match - A maximum of 8 players is allowed to enter a room and fight against each other or spectate the fight.

There are a total of 21 playable characters in the base roster with an additional 15 characters released in three DLCs; FighterZ Pass 1, 2 and 3.

Reception

Dragon Ball FighterZ met with great enthusiasm from fighting game fans and many said it could potentially be the next big competitive fighting game. The game received favourable reviews from the critics. It was regarded highly for its art design, animation, Story Mode, as well as the fighting mechanics. Metacritic, a well known website that aggregates reviews, scored the game for each platform. The scores were fairly high and consistent throughout; 85/100 for PC, 87/100 for Playstation 4, 86/100 for Xbox One and 88/100 for Nintendo Switch.

Over two million copies were shipped within a week after the release, becoming the fastest selling Dragon Ball game. It also reached second in the sales chart in 4 countries; UK, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. It was behind Monster Hunter: World. By October 2018, 3.5 millions copies were shipped worldwide and total sales had reached approximately 4 million copies the following year in March.

It has also won many awards including; Game Critics Awards 2017 for Best Fighting Game, The Game Awards 2018 for Best Fighting Game, Gamers Choice Award 2018 for Fan Favourite Fighting Game, Titanium Awards 2018 for Best Fighting Game and National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers Awards 2019 for Game, Franchise Fighting.
