OtapediaBroly Second Coming Movie - Dragon Ball

Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming is a Japanese anime martial arts and fantasy film that is based on Akira Toriyama’s original Dragon Ball manga. It is the tenth feature-length film in the Dragon Ball Z series and first premiered at the Toei Anime Film Fair on March 12th, 1994. The film was directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi, produced by Chiaki Imada, written by Takao Koyama, and has music composed by Shunsuke Kikuchi.

Summary

The opening scene of the movie shows a space pod flying into Earth. This pod contains the Saiyan Broly, who apparently managed to escape the destruction of New Planet Vegeta after a comet collided with it. Broly is injured and weak, but alive. Colder weather begins to set in, however, and Broly eventually loses consciousness and is encased in ice.

In the present day (seven years later), Goten, Videl, and Trunks are searching for the Dragon Balls and end up stumbling into a cursed village named Nataday. The local priest of the village says that they are constantly threatened by an unseen monster and that they have to provide sacrifices to appease the creature. Videl and the two half-Saiyans devise a plan to trick the creature and solve their problems.

The plan seems to be going fine until Goten begins to complain that he is hungry. He begins to cry, which might cause their plan to fail. Videl slaps him to try to keep him quiet, though she ends up having to give Goten a dumpling to make him stop. Their plan ends up working and the monster turns out to be a dinosaur, which they quickly take care of. Peace has been returned to Village Nataday and the trio continues on their journey for the Dragon Balls. What the group didn’t realize, however, is that Goten’s crying earlier caused Broly to awaken. Early the next morning, Videl is woken up by explosions in the distance, causing her to take off and investigate its source.

Videl comes face-to-face with Broly. Since she had no idea who Broly was or what he was capable, she tried to fight him, but was quickly knocked unconscious by the Saiyan. Goten and Trunks arrive later and discover Broly and an unresponsive Videl. The two children are scared to start a fight with the massive foe, however, Broly looks at Goten and is reminded of his father, Goku. This causes him to fly into an uncontrollable rage. Knowing that they are both in extreme danger, Goten and Trunks transform into Super Saiyans, but are quickly overpowered by Broly. Before they are killed, however, Gohan steps in and saves them. To Broly, Gohan resembles Goku more than Goten, so Gohan now becomes Broly’s target. As Gohan keeps Broly busy, the other three attempt to find the last Dragon Ball.

The battle continues and both Gohan and Broly use their Super Saiyan 2 and Legendary Super Saiyan forms respectively. Although Gohan still cannot defeat Broly with sheer strength, he manages to land a couple of decent hits on him. Gohan notices a nearby volcano that is spewing hot magma and comes up with a plan to use that to kill Broly. He attempts to bait Broly into the area and manages to successfully throw the Saiyan into the burning magma. Gohan, however, is now at his limit and passes out from exhaustion. He lands on a nearby rock that the magma is also flowing down, placing Gohan in great danger. Krillin, however, swoops in and picks up Gohan before he is engulfed by the magma.

Despite being tossed into a pit of lava, Broly emerges once again, though severely burned and injured. The enraged Saiyan continues his attack on Gohan, who is all but powerless to stop him. Videl tries her best to make Broly stop, but the Legendary Super Saiyan is completely unfazed by her attempts. Gohan, however, is inspired by her actions and stands up for one final attack fueled by pure emotion. Gohan charges a Kamehameha while Broly retaliates with his own energy attack. Broly’s ball of energy begins to dwarf the Kamehameha.

All seven of the Dragon Balls have now been collected and their glow awakens Goten, who decides to join Gohan in this final attack. Although Shenron has not been summoned, Goten wishes that Goku was there to help them. This wish is seemingly granted, as they all hear their father encourage them to unleash all of their power. Trunks also wakes up and uses what little energy he has left to shoot Broly to distract him long enough for Goten, Gohan, and Goku to burst through Broly’s energy ball and launch him toward the sun. The Dragon Balls are redistributed around the world once again, leading the brothers to think that Goku was truly there with him, but he is nowhere to be seen.

Music

The opening theme of the movie is “WE GOTTA POWER”, which is performed by Hironobu Kageyama and features lyrics by Yukinojo Mori. The song itself was composed by Chiho Kiyoka and arranged by Kenji Yamamoto. The film’s ending theme is titled “Kiseki no Big Fight” and shares the same credits as the opening.

Release

Outside of Japan, North America first received a release of Broly - Second Coming on both DVD and VHS in 2005. The film was also later remastered and re-released along with Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan on Blu-ray. The Broly Trilogy films are later released as a full Blu-ray and DVD set on March 31st, 2009. On January 3rd, 2012, another remastered set of the last four Dragon Ball Z films was released.
