OtapediaGotenks - Dragon Ball

Gotenks is the successful fusion of Goten and Trunks after performing the Metamoran Fusion Dance properly. Although he is a combination of two characters, Gotenks seems to be stronger than their individual strengths combined and can accomplish feats that neither of them can achieve on their own.

Character and Personality

Like many fusion characters, Gotenks is voiced by both of the characters involved in the fusion (Goten and Trunks in this case). As such, he is voiced by both Masako Nozawa and Takeshi Kusao in the Japanese dub. In the English dub, he is voiced by Kara Edwards and Laura Bailey in most instances, though Alexis Tipton replaces Laura Bailey in the Xenoverse series, Dragon Ball Z Kai, and Dragon Ball Super.

In his base form, Gotenks has a combination of black and lavender hair (representative of Goten’s and Trunks’ hair respectively). After transforming into a Super Saiyan, however, these different hair colors both become a single shade of yellow. One possibly strange feature of Gotenks’ design is that he has a widow’s peak much like Vegeta’s despite neither Goten or Trunks having one. Gotenks also wears a dark blue Metamoran vest with yellow padding and a teal-colored obi-belt that is used to hold up a pair of white silk pants. A similarly teal colored cloth is used to wrap the bottom of the pants just above Gotenks’ black shoes.

Despite his immense power, Gotenks is still a child and certainly acts like it. He is playful, rebellious, immature, and incredibly arrogant at points. Possibly due to his incredible power increase, he often thinks that he can take on anyone and doesn’t think about the consequences of challenging them. Another aspect of Gotenks’ personality is his tendency to be overly dramatic. He likes to consider himself a hero and often gives himself names like “The Hero of Justice”. Furthermore, he tends to play up what would normally be simple punches and kicks by giving them flashy names.

Transformations, Abilities, and Techniques

As a fusion of both Goten and Trunks, it is assumed that Gotenks has access to all of the transformations and techniques that the two can use individually, though Gotenks also has a few unique abilities that only he can use.

Transformations

  • Failed Fusion: If the fusion dance isn’t performed correctly, the fusion still occurs, but the resulting fighter is incredibly hindered in some way. For example, a fat and skinny version of Gotenks has been shown in Dragon Ball Z. Both failed attempts have extremely limited strength and ki at their disposal.

  • Super Saiyan: Gotenks can turn into a Super Saiyan in two different ways. He can either power up from his base form and transform or Goten and Trunks can both turn into Super Saiyans individually, then fuse. Gotenks apparently had issues transforming himself at first, causing the two to try again and transform individually before fusing. As a Super Saiyan, Gotenks was said to be strong enough to defeat Majin Buu, but paled in comparison to Super Buu.

  • Super Saiyan 2: Although Gotenks never uses the form in combat, he does have to use the form before he can use Super Saiyan 3. In Dragon Ball Heroes, Adult Gotenks can also use the form.

  • Super Saiyan 3: Gotenks’ strongest transformation. Gotenks is the second character to achieve this form, with Goku being the first. He was able to achieve this form after training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber in the 30 minutes Super Buu gave him, which is equal to a few days inside the chamber.

Unique Abilities and Techniques

  • Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack: One of Gotenks’ signature moves. Gotenks creates a group of visible ghost clones of himself by spitting them out of his mouth. These ghosts are incredibly sensitive to touch and unleash a deadly explosion after coming into contact with anything, even themselves. This attack is often one of Gotenks’ super attacks in many of the games he appears in, though there are many different variations.

  • Galactic Donut: A very powerful binding technique that Gotenks uses by creating a ring of light that can be wrapped around an opponent and constricted, preventing them from moving. A variation of this attack called the “Charging Ultra Buu Buu Volleyball” was used to trap Super Buu in several Galactic Donuts that essentially sealed him into a ball that the characters used to pass to each other until Gotenks finishes the volley with a powerful spike.

TV Series Appearances

Gotenks first appeared in the Buu saga of Dragon Ball Z, but later appears again in Dragon Ball Super to challenge Beerus, though his attempts are not taken seriously. Later in the Copy-Vegeta saga, Gotenks tries to be a hero again, but is unable to do any significant damage to his opponent

Film Appearances

Gotenks appears in three movies: Fusion Reborn, Wrath of the Dragon, and Battle of Gods. In Fusion Reborn, Goten and Trunks fuse after sensing Goku and Vegeta fusing to create Gogeta. In Wrath of the Dragon, Gotenks attempts to fight Hirudegarn, but is quickly knocked out by the massive monster. Gotenks’ appearance in Battle of Gods is very similar to that in the God of Destruction saga from Dragon Ball Super, as the two cover roughly the same material.

Video Games Appearances

Gotenks is also a popular playable character in many different Dragon Ball games. Some popular entries include:
