OtapediaChi Chi - Dragon Ball

Chi-Chi is the wife of the protagonist Son Goku and appears in most of the Dragon Ball series in minor roles. She is often seen wearing a variation of Chinese and Korean clothes. She is voiced by Mayumi Shō in Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z Seasons 1-2, and Dragon Ball Z Movies 1-3, then by Naoko Watanabe in Dragon Ball Z Seasons 3-9, Dragon Ball Z Movies 4-13, Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Kai, Dragon Ball Super, video games and other appearances.

Appearances in Dragon Ball

In Dragon Ball, Chi-Chi first appears as a little girl with a blue bikini, a pink helmet, and a green cape. Her first meeting with Yamcha is when she is on the way to find Master Roshi in search of the Bansho fan, as she needs it to put out the fire that is surrounding her castle home. She attacks Yamcha with a laser beam from her helmet as she is afraid of strangers, but is knocked out by Yamcha. Yamcha realizes who she is and takes her back to her father, Ox-King. When she wakes up, Yamcha tells her he is in love with her to keep Chi-Chi from attacking him, a lie that she believes, which allows Yamcha to run away when she isn't looking.

Her next encounter is with Goku, who has been sent by Ox-King to take her to Master Roshi’s island. While getting on the Nimbus, she accidentally pulls Goku’s tail and, as Goku can’t tell the difference between a boy and a girl by appearance, he pats her crotch with his foot. Annoyed by this, she knocks him off the Nimbus. This awkward exchange, however, makes her believe that Goku may be attracted to her. They reach Master Roshi’s house to learn that he threw the Bansho fan out, leading them to have to find another way to extinguish the flames.

Chi-Chi, Goku, and Master Roshi head back to Fire Mountain, where Roshi manages to extinguish the flames with a Kamehameha, but demolishes the castle along with it. Before Goku’s party leaves, Chi-Chi asks Goku if he will think about her on his travels. He tells her he will and returns the question, making Chi-Chi blush.

They meet once more as children when Fire Mountain’s village had been rebuilt and repopulated. Chi-Chi, waiting for Goku to return, consulted a psychic who told her that Goku was on his way back. She started preparing for their wedding with Ox-King, picking flowers outside the village. When Goku appears, the two talk for some time. Shortly after, the village is attacked by the Red Ribbon army, pushing Goku to continue on his adventure. Before leaving she asks him ‘What about the wedding?’. He tells her that he will try it out when he comes next time, not understanding what a wedding is.

Chi-Chi joins the 23rd World Martial Arts tournament as ‘anonymous’. Chi-Chi greets Goku, who meets her with confusion, as he has no idea who she is. This angers ger greatly causing her to shout at him calling him stupid for not only forgetting her name, but their promise as well. She is defeated quickly by Goku by ring-out and then tells him her name, much to everyone’s surprise. After being reminded of their promise, Goku proposes to Chi-Chi right there and then. She tells Goku she loves him, which confuses the young, naive fighter. She demonstrates her feelings by kissing him on the cheek before apologizing to Yamcha for not marrying him (remembering his fake confession from when she was a child). Eventually, they get married and live peacefully in a forest home before having their first son.

Appearances in Dragon Ball Z

In Dragon Ball Z, Chi-Chi is now 20 years old and has her first son, Son Gohan. Four years later, Raditz attacks Earth and Goku is killed in the battle. Piccolo takes Gohan away for training and Chi-Chi is left distraught and alone. One year later, she goes back to Roshi’s house to watch the battle with the Saiyans on Fortuneteller Baba’s crystal ball. When the battle is over, she goes to retrieve her unconscious son and immobilized husband.

Hospitalized and unable to move, Chi-Chi cares for Goku during his stay in the hospital until he is healed. In the meantime, Gohan, Krillin, and Bulma set off for Namek to find the Namekian Dragon Balls. Unable to deal with this, she gathers up a team consisting of Roshi, Puar, Oolong and Yajirobe to go to Namek and find Gohan and Krillin. The spaceship doesn’t launch, however, and she is forced to wait for them to return to Earth.

After his return, Chi-Chi hires a home tutor for Gohan, who is quickly fired and thrown from a window by Chi-Chi for insulting Goku. With Goku back from Namek, Piccolo stays at their home in order to train for the upcoming Androids. Chi-Chi is reluctant, but allows Gohan to go with Goku and train for the upcoming fight with Cell. Chi-Chi, distraught at having lost her husband and nearly her son as devotes her life to raising her children. Gohan manages to enter college and Chi-chi even uncharacteristically trains her second son, Son Goten, in martial arts. She is largely a cameo character in the Majin Buu saga and afterwards and, like many other characters, is killed when Earth is destroyed, though she is revived on New Namek.

Appearances in Dragon Ball Super

She is most often used as a minor plot element and has several cameo appearances.

Appearances in Dragon Ball GT

In Dragon Ball GT Chi-Chi, now much older, usually associates with Bulma and Videl. She still has a strong motherly attitude towards her children.
