Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon is a Japanese anime fantasy and martial arts film that premiered on July 15th, 1995 at the Toei Anime Fair in Japan. It is the 13th feature-length Dragon Ball Z movie.

Plot

On another planet, a young alien boy on guard holds his sword, but gets stomped on by a huge foot. The footprint of the monster is left behind as an evil laugh echoes in the surroundings.

Back on Earth, police chase armed men who continuously wreck everything while on the run. They outrun the police, but Gohan stands in front of the car and stops it with his foot.

They fire guns on Gohan, but he catches the bullets, stomps on the car, and the three armed men are sent flying in front of the vehicle. Videl then appears and one of the criminals attacks her with a knife but she dodges while Gohan disarms them. Videl and Gohan introduce themselves as a crime-fighting team. Meanwhile, an alien-looking man hides behind a building and laughs.

When Gohan and Videl join their class late, Videl receives a call about a man about to jump from a tower. Gohan excuses himself then proceeds to save the man (who is the same alien hiding earlier). After arriving, the alien introduces himself as Hoi shows them a music box and tells the story of Tapion, the brave hero who saved Planet Konats. Hoi tells them that Tapion is trapped inside the box and is the only one who can save them from the evil that’s soon to come. They end up summoning the Dragon Shenron and wish that Tapion be released.

A humanoid alien emerges from the box and plays a song and points his sword at Hoi, saying to stay back. He scolds the group and tells them that what they did is foolish, admitting that he is not sure he can stop it this time. Gohan asks what he means, but he turns away.

A monster makes its way into the city shortly after Tapion was freed. Gohan and Videl come to the burning city only to see the lower half of a lizard-like torso destroying everything it can find. Gohan attacks the creature, but it soon vanishes in thin air as Tapion begins playing his ocarina.

Trunks continues to bring Tapion food and drinks, despite him telling the child to stop. Tapion accidentally falls asleep and the monster, known as Hirudegarn, emerges from the ocarina. He quickly wakes up and plays a song on the instrument, sealing Hirudegarn once again.

While Trunks talks to Tapion, Hoi comes in and tries snatching the ocarina, though it lands on Trunks, who picks it up while and keeps it away from Hoi. Hoi tries to convince Trunks that Tapion was the one who destroyed the city, but Trunks decides to give it Tapion.

Tapion has now befriended Trunks and tells him about his brother and home planet before Hirudegarn destroyed it, but Trunks ends up falling asleep. Bulma asks Tapion to stay, though he declines. He does, however, tell Bulma the darker side of his past.

Hoi was a member of the power-hungry magicians known as the Kashvaar, who revived Hirudegarn to exterminate all life forms that weren’t like their own. Tapion shows the enchanted sword and talks about how the song he played earlier was used to distract Hirudegarn while his mentor cut the monster in half with the sword. Unfortunately, Hirudegarn survived the attack and needed to be sealed in the musical boxes. Tapion and his brother, Minota, were selected to guard the boxes to prevent the two halves of the monster from rejoining.

Tapion says that Hirudegarn won't be a threat as long as he remains awake, but it would mean that he would never sleep. Bulma offers to build Tapion a room with the same properties as the music box, allowing him to rest without Hirudegarn escaping.

A nightmare causes Tapion to destroy the room in his sleep, causing his half of Hirudegarn to escape. Several attempts to rectify the situation are made, but Hoi manages to interfere just long enough for Hirudegarn to fuse together. Hoi orders Hirudegarn to destroy everything, which the monster does, starting with Goku and his sons. Vegeta joins the fight as well, but gets thrown by the monster's tail.

Goten and Trunks fuse to form Gotenks. The fused fighter begins firing attacks on Hirudegarn, though they quickly notice that it is covered in a cocoon that quickly hatches. Goku attacks, however, he is knocked down like many others. While most warriors are now knocked unconscious, Trunks wakes to hear Tapion's ocarina. Hirudegarn charges a fire attack on Tapion, but he survives and seals the monster within himself.

Tapion tells Trunks to kill him with his sword, but he can’t bring himself to do it. The monster escapes once again and the ocarina is shattered. Hoi is also killed after getting stomped on by Hirudegarn’s foot.

Goku uses Super Saiyan 3, while Trunks uses the sword to cut off Hirudegarn's tail. Although he succeeds, Trunks is stopped by Goku, who faces Hirudegarn himself. Goku taunts the monster enough to create an opening, which he uses to attack with his Dragon Fist, ending the battle.

After the fight, Bulma lets Tapion use a time machine to travel back in time to his home planet. As a token of gratitude, Tapion gives his sword to Trunks..

New Characters

  • Tapion: the legendary warrior from Konats who battled Hirudegarn. Tapion and his brother Minotia lived peacefully many years ago. When the Kashvaar summoned Hirudegarn, however, their planet was destroyed. The Konatsians fought and managed to seal Hirudegarn by using two special ocarinas in order to stun the monster while the brothers’ wizard mentor cut the beast in half with the enchanted sword. The two halves were placed in music boxes and given Tapion and Minotia so they would never be able to fuse back together.

  • Hirudegarn: the main antagonist that devastates everything in its path. It is fairly mindless and seems to live only for destruction.

  • Hoi: is an evil mage who searches for Hirudegarn's two halves. He kills Minotia and later gets Tapion’s half by tricking the Z-Warriors into releasing Tapion with the Dragon Balls.
