Fate/Extra

Overview

Fate/Extra is a dungeon crawler RPG developed by Type-Moon and Image Epoch and published by Marvelous Entertainment. The game was released on the PlayStation Portable in Japan in July 2010 and in North America the following year in November.

Plot

The main character (Hakuno Kishinami) wakes up in a strange place with no memories of their past and is forced to fight as a Master in a war they don’t understand in order to obtain the mythical Holy Grail and have any wish they desire granted. With their Servant by their side, they will face friends and foes alike in their quest to not only obtain the Grail but, maybe more importantly, find out who they are.

Development

Fate/Extra was first announced in the September 2009 issue of Famitsu as a reimagining of the Fate series as a Japanese RPG. The game’s staff includes Shuetsu Kadowaki as the director, Kazuya Niino as the producer, Kinoko Nasu as scenario writer, Arco Wada as character designer and artist, Huke as weapon designer, and Takashi Takeuchi as character design supervisor. The game was released on the PlayStation Portable in Japan on July 22, 2010. The following year on Nov. 21, a localized version of the game was released in North America by Aksys Games. On May 4, 2012, the game was released in PAL territories by publisher Ghostlight. The game’s opening theme song is "Ranse Eroica" by Ali Project.

Gameplay

The game’s two main areas are the Arena and the Academy. In the Arena, players battle opponents using their Servant in order to gain experience points and in-game currency. In the Academy, the game uses a visual novel format in which players develop through the story, converse with other characters, and can gain knowledge about their opponent’s to help them in battle. The Academy also features a private room for Hakuno where the player can spend time with their Servant and learn more about them.
