Fate/Grand Order: First Order

Overview

Fate Grand Order: First Order is a prequel to the events of the anime television series, Fate Grand Order - Absolute Demonic Battlefront: Babylonia. Fate Grand Order: First Order is told as a 74-minute long movie. It first aired in Japan on December 31, 2016. The world of Fate/ Grand Order: First Order and Fate/Grand Order - Absolute Demonic Battlefront: Babylonia is separate from the reality that is presented in the Fate/stay night series. As such, watching any of the anime adaptations of the Fate/stay night series is not a prerequisite to watching Fate Grand Order: First Order. However, doing so does provide some background and context to some of the events and characters that appear in Fate Grand Order: First Order. Also, Fate/Grand Order: First Order can act as a kind of prologue to the Fate/Grand Order mobile game, so it’s not required to play that game before viewing this movie in order to enjoy it.

Fate Grand Order: First Order was produced by Studio Lay-duce. It was directed by Hitoshi Nanba. He has been the director of numerous anime projects, including Baki the Grappler and the Golden Kamuy series. Takuro Tsukada filled the role of Assistant Director for the movie. His other works as Episode Director include My Hero Academia and Noragami. The theme song for the movie is “Colour” by Maaya Sakamoto, who is both a singer and a voice actress. She is known for singing theme songs for Macross Frontier and The Vision of Escaflowne.

Synopsis

The story is set in 2015. A powerful organization utilizing both magic and science at that time called the Organization for the Preservation of Human Order, Finis Chaldea, or simply Chaldea for short, is tasked with saving humanity from extinction. Humanity is in danger of being destroyed by the appearance of singularities that happen throughout the flow of time which can disrupt the fabric of time and space. To end these singularities as they occur in the timeline, Chaldea’s mages (Masters) and Heroic Spirits (Servants) must pair up and travel through time and intervene with either the events of that time or destroy the singularities themselves.

The story focuses on a young girl named Mash Kyrielight who was developed by Chaldea to be a Demi-Servant by combining a Heroic Spirit with a human’s body, and a young boy named Ritsuka Fujimaru, who has been designated by Chaldea as a potential Master. Mash’s small pet, Fou, also tags along for the story. The Chaldea organization had brought together dozens of potential Masters and Servants to aid in ending Singularity F. However, a mysterious explosion suddenly breaks out in the Chaldea facilities, critically injuring all potential Master and Servants except for Ritsuka. The disaster leaves Mash crushed under large debris on the verge of death. Ritsuka finds her and attempts to stay with her in her final moments alive.

As the two are about to die in the destruction, Chaldea’s time travel technology, Rayshifting, activates and sends Ritsuka and Mash (now unharmed with her Demi-Servant form unleashed) back to 2004 in Fuyuki City during Singularity F, which is also the last moments of the Fourth Holy Grail War. In this iteration of the war and at this exact moment, Saber Alter had nearly won when the Singularity F took over.

Ritsuka and Mash land in 2004 and are immediately attacked by a volley of arrows from Archer. After surviving this, they meet up with Director Olga Marie Amunisphere (who has also traveled back to 2004). Their power is sensed by Lancer (Medusa). Lancer has also become a thrall to Saber. After Lancer beheads pathetic Shinji Matou who she had earlier turned to stone, she begins a fight with Mash. Mash seems outmatched by Lancer, but Caster (Cú Chulainn) appears and backs her up. The two work together to destroy Lancer. Caster then explains the current situation of the war to our protagonists. They agree to form an alliance to defeat Saber and Archer, who are protecting Singularity F.

Ritsuka, Mash, Caster engage Archer and Saber in two separate battles. Eventually, our heroes are victorious and destroy both Saber and Archer. But the true mastermind behind this Singularity, Professor Leff, appears before them. He reveals himself as a traitor to the Chaldea Security Organization and the one who planted the bomb that destroyed the facilities. He also explains that the Director Olga’s physical body in 2015 is dead, and that only her consciousness still exists because she Rayshifted right at the moment of death.

Then, Professor Leff pulls Olga into CHALDEAS, which has now transformed into a black hole due to the power of the Holy Grail. Leff reveals that the world in 2015 is already destroyed and only the Chaldea facilities remain because of a magnetic shield protecting it. Finally, Leff leaves Ritsuka and Mash to die as space and time fall apart around them. Fortunately, they are able to Rayshift back to 2015 in the nick of time.

Seven new singularities have appeared, and now Ritsuka and Mash must eliminate all of them to save the world. The name given to this mission is Grand Order.
