Rin Tohsaka - Fate

Background

Rin Tohsaka is the daughter of Tokiomi Tohsaka and Aoi Tohsaka. Her family the Tohsakas along with the Makiri and Einzbern formed the first Fuyuki Holy Grail War. She lost her father during the 4th Holy Grail War when Kirei Kotomine, quite literally, stabbed him in the back. Her mother fell into such a distraught state she needed to be cared for mentally and physically. Once she died, she was under the care of her guardian, the back-stabbing Kirei Kotomine. After her mother’s death she inherited their land, but much of the profitable parts were lost due to Kirei’s mismanagement. Before her father’s death she was taught how to do gem magecraft which Kirei continued and she studied on by herself as well. When she was a child she was separated from her sister Sakura who was adopted into the Matou family at the agreement of her parents for her to be trained as a mage by Zouken Matou.

Appearance

Rin Tohsaka has long brown hair often kept up in two pigtails with black bow and aqua eyes. She is fair skinned. She is usually seen wearing a red turtleneck with a cross on the front and buttons at the sleeves, black skirt, black thigh-high socks, and brown loafers though she does have other outfits and they also vary depending on the series she is in.

Personality

Rin is strong-willed, intelligent, and shy about her feelings unless they are anger related. She acts quite tsundere like. She cares about those she allows close to her wanting the best for them and to help protect them but also believe that she should care about her own happiness and safety first. She often rebukes Shirou Emiya for his self-sacrificial tendencies. Honor and logic are important to her. She is not afraid to speak her mind. Her hobbies include gems.

Relationships

Shirou Emiya: She has a crush on Shirou Emiya and in some series’ endings they eventually become a couple. In Fate/hollow ataraxia (Eclipse scenario, Beginners), they make love which begins at a rough start but ends in a heart-to-heart which brings them closer.
Archer: Despite the drama and betrayal (on Archer’s part) between them as well as that hostile and disappointing first encounter after she summons him instead of Saber who she wanted, Rin always cares for him and cries when he dies. She promises to not let Shirou’s life develop into the ending that is Archer.
Kirei Kotomine: Kirei was always suspect to Rin since her childhood. She never quite warmed up to him, and her gut was right to do so since he did murder her father.
Sakura Matou: Rin cared for her sister and had a loving sibling friendship as children. When she was adopted by the Matou family, Rin deluded herself into thinking she was happier and better off. In some series endings she is reunited with her.
Saber: Rin had wanted to summon Saber but got Archer instead. She now likes to tease her and is sometimes jealous of the relationship between Saber and Shirou.

Abilities

Rin has a ton of promise being that she has the rare ability to be able to manipulate all five Elements. Being a Tohsaka, she specializes in Conversion of Power which she uses to charge jewels with magical energy which is Jewel Magecraft and something her father started teaching her as a child. The jewels serve as Mystic Codes, basically they can be used to power spells and cast attacks. However, they’re most often destroyed in their use making the Magecraft a costly pursuit. She can also perform Gandr which is like shooting a bullet of energy from her finger or raining them down on an enemy. She also knows reinforcement sorcery which she can use to make herself and others stronger. Her martial art skills were learned from Kirei Kotomine.

Equipment

Rin carries gems with her she can use for her Jewel Magecraft as well as a pendant that her father Tokiomi Tohsaka gave her. She also has her father’s Azoth Sword which was gifted to Kirei Kotomine, which he used to stab her father, and then gave to her on the day of his funeral. Another sword she carries is the Jeweled Sword of Zelretch. Rin’s Pendant is special because of how powerful it is. With all the power stored inside it she can complete feats she wouldn’t have ever been able otherwise such as reviving someone on the brink of death. It is a clue in the Unlimited Blade Works route of Archer’s true identity.
