Caster/Lancer (Gilles de Rais “Bluebeard”) - Fate

Who was Gilles de Rais “Bluebeard”?

Gilles de Rais was a knight, lord, and leader in the French army who fought alongside Joan of Arc. He was later convicted as a confessed serial killer of children. It is said the French folktale of “Bluebeard” might have been derived by him, though “Bluebeard” was a serial killer of his wives not children.

Gen Urobuchi was inspired to use Gilles de Rais because of his and many others believe that Saber’s identity was Joan of Arc. He had previously thought of teasing fans with another woman he identified as Joan and Gilles de Rais fit perfectly into this tricky scheme.

Appearance

Caster: Caster is tall with scraggly shoulder length hair he brushes back and out of his face. He has very large, fish-like eyes that often are looking in opposite directions and usually a scowl on his face unless he is doing something heinous. His skin looks sickly, pale, and lifeless. He does not have eyebrows. He is muscular and very tall which is fitting for having once been a knight. He wears a long black robe with a collar that is like an oval innertube covered in fabric which is stripped with a snake and then trimmed with what looks like narrow petals of a poisonous plant. Her fingers are long and his hands boney.

Saber: Having not yet fallen into his depravity as Caster, he wears the white, teal, and silver armor of the One-Hundred Year War. His eyes and hair are dark black. He has a fit, athletic build. His expression is serious though not cruel. His hair which is shoulder length falls on either side of his face. His armor changes with each Ascension. The armor of his 2nd Ascension varies in its details which gains fang like adornments, while the armor is nearly gone (only covering one side of his body) in his 3rd Ascension. He has yet gone insane and that shows in his appearance. His eyes do not yet bulge from his skull.

Personality:

Caster: His alignment is Chaotic Evil. He greatly enjoys torturing and murdering, especially younger children. His wish is to use the Holy Grail to resurrect Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc) who he loved. He doesn’t believe God punishes the wicked, but that humans do that to each other. He has a “good” relationship with his master Ryuunosuke Uryuu because of their shared interest in killing innocent people and Ryuunosuke’s infatuation with his level of cruelty which includes gives his victims a moment of hope before their demise. On the Fate/Zero Blu-ray Illustrator Takashi Takeuchi even joked that the two should marry each other already. He even goes as far to praise him for his thoughts on God as being an author of the world who would appreciate being entertained by a saint as much as a cunning villain which fuels his desire to murder more people and more cruelly.

Saber: His alignment is Lawful Good. His love was Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc) whose existence helped him believe in God amongst such a dark world. He also enjoyed art which he spent a large amount of his money on purchasing. His heart was broken when Jeanne d’Arc (Joan of Arc) was executed. He was eventually put to death not because of his murderous ways but because he held too much land and it was feared he would sell it to an enemy nation.

Abilities

Caster: He wasn’t a very skilled mage and one, if not the, weakest Servant in the series. He obtained most of his power from his Noble Phantasm, Prelati’s Spellbook. It however was able to act as an incredible mana source and spell casting guide which allowed him to conjure up incredible numbers of creatures for opponent servants to fight as well as one nearly unbeatable creature. He is also able to keep creatures in damage-resistant status and craft magical items such as the mind-controlling bracelet he made for Ryuunosuke.

Saber: He also has Prelati’s Spellbook as a Noble Phantasm but also the Saint War Order. It is an Anti-Unit (Self) type with one target. It is also known as the “Saint War Order: Rally Upon the Holy Banner Roar.” Because it is the most meaningful part of his past - fighting alongside Jeanne d’Arc with her Luminosité Éternelle, it also ranks up his parameters. His Skills are Military Tactics, Golden Rule, and Mad Enhancement. He can also take STR reinforcement through Prelati’s Inspiration but at the cost of his memories.
