Aldebaran (much more commonly known as Al) is the personal knight and attendant to Priscilla Barielle. He is always seen wearing a black Vollachian helmet in order to hide injuries he has sustained on his face. His left arm is also severed from the elbow down. Other than that his garb is fairly casual in the form of a green vest and orange cloak (and nothing else) on his upper torso, tattered looking pants, and bandaged feet in sandals. He also wears a belt with pouches and carries his sword in its sheath around his lower back. Al is a very boisterous fellow but also one with a calm head and seems to roll with the punches.
History
Al (just like Subaru) originally comes from Japan of our world. He was summoned around 18 years earlier. In his travels he visited the Gladiator Island Ginunihive where he lost his left arm but also learned how to fight. He spent nearly 10 years as a gladiator before joining a fifrty man tournament to choose Priscilla's (then known as Prisca) knight. Although Al didn't even make it into the top four of the tournament, Priscilla decided to choose him as her knight anyway and he remained at her side ever since.
He remained at her side even through the threat on her life and subsequent faked death. As Priscilla got shuffled from husband to husband over the next few years he continued to be her loyal attendant. Eventually Priscilla came into control of House Barielle and became a Royal Candidate for the throne. Around the officiation ceremony he meets Subaru and immediately displays a kinship and understanding to the boy's struggles.
According to the author Al is scheduled to be featured in Arc 7 and that he is involved with one of the three mysteries of Re:Zero.
Relationships
Priscilla Barielle - Al is Priscilla's loyal knight and attendant though the two have different views of their relationship. He doesn't see himself as a knight and is perfectly aware of Priscilla's low opinion on him as a person. However, he is loyal to her and considers himself as her caretaker, often taking actions to pre-empt any outbursts or tantrums she may have. He offers advice freely even if she doesn't always make it welcome.
Unknown Sin Archbishop - It is likely that Al is familiar with an Archbishop of Sin as he told Capella when they met that she was "considerably different from the Sin he knew". In fact he may be familiar with the Witch Cult or at least some aspects of it as he warned everyone to hide their true name from an Archbishop of Gluttony.
Ram - Ram and Al share some kind of past though it has yet to be fully elaborated at this point and he expressed displeasure at the mention of her.
Subaru - Al immediately formed a good impression of Subaru as if he understood a lot of Subaru's troubles instinctively. Over Subaru's initial interactions with Priscilla, Al would always be at the very least supportive of the boy though his loyalties meant that he always ceded to Priscilla's whims. In a timeline when Subaru failed to obtain Priscilla's aid during Arc 3, Al actually consoled the boy and offered a token amount of encouragement though he wasn't actually able to provide assistance.
Abilities
Unknown Retry Ability - Al possesses a seemingly unique but unknown ability which allows him to relive a certain amount of time over and over again. This ability works in a limited area which Al calls his territory and he refers to using this ability as a bet. Others in the effect range tend to be oblivious to its effect although some opponents have noticed his return.
Magic User - Al is capable of using Earth Magic and has specifically demonstrated the defensive Dona magic as well as the offensive El Dona.
Al has admitted that he relies on outwitting people and catching them by surprise in order to win fights. He wields a sword called the Blue Dragon Sword. Further his unique looking helmet is actually a replica helmet related to the Gladiator King.
