Natsuki Subaru is the main protagonist in the Re:Zero series. He has short black hair and brown eyes. He typically wears a tracksuit though he has worn different outfits for various reasons such as when he worked as a butler in the Mathers mansion. Subaru speaks in a very informal manner and has little regard for station or circumstance, often speaking his mind to everyone around him. He has a brash attitude and has been known to act without fully thinking especially when it comes to life and death situations as he greatly fears Return by Death. Over time his brushes with death have steeled his resolve to become someone who can save those who are dear to him. As his skills have grown so too has his confidence in taking action and facing off against terrifying enemies who outclass him.

History

From a young age Subaru idolized his father Natsuki Kenichi who was a well liked and highly talented person in his community. He emulated a lot of his father’s mannerism, bravado, and boisterous personality. While Subaru excelled early on, he eventually reached the limits of his capabilities and became more like the average person around him which caused him to spiral into self-doubt and depression as he realized he wasn’t anyone special.

Relationships

Emilia - Subaru is Emilia’s knight and devoted himself to her not long after meeting her, vowing to protect her no matter how many times he has to die. Emilia does not reciprocate these feelings at first, but after seeing Subaru continuously struggle and fight for her sake she begins to show feelings for him.
Rem - Rem treated Subaru antagonistically at first, as she believed he was a threat to Emilia. This changed however, as she started to be romantically interested in him after they worked together during Arc 2. She confesses her love for him during Arc 3, and suggests that they elope. Subaru declines, stating that he is devoted to Emilia, but Rem is second only to her. After Arc 3, Subaru becomes determined to wake Rem from her coma, believing that Rem would want him to continue to fight, instead of being heartbroken by her condition.
Ram - Ram and Subaru are good friends, with Ram being the first person to discourage any suspicion of him being a spy at the beginning of his stay at the Mathers Mansion. Ram trusts in Subaru’s judgement, even if the outcome of the scenario seems unlikely.
Beatrice - Beatrice was quite unfriendly with Subaru at first, as she believed he was annoying, and as such, would often mock him. Subaru would often rely on Beatrice for help with magic, and went to her to heal the curses he was afflicted with during Arc 2. Subaru forms a spirit contract with her, after which she begins to act more friendly towards him.
Roswaal L Mathers - Roswaal and Subaru seemed to get along well upon first meeting, however Roswaal did not fully trust Subaru, and was quick to blame him for Rem’s sudden death. Their relationship changed quite drastically during Arc 4, when Roswaal’s intention to use Subaru’s Return by Death ability to revive Echidna is revealed, leading to Subaru seeing Roswaal as an enemy. After the conclusion of Arc 4, Subaru became more tolerant of Roswaal, after Roswaal agreed to help him and Emilia.
Felt - Subaru saved Felt from being killed by Elsa in the city of Lugnica, after which they became friends. Felt is very grateful towards Subaru for this, and from Arc 5 onwards she refers to him as big brother (niichan).
Reinhard van Astrea - Reinhard and Subaru are friendly towards each other, with Subaru even bragging to the Witches of Sin that he personally knows the current Sword Saint.
Satella - Satella has an obsessive love for Subaru, and gave him the Return by Death ability so that he could kill her. Although Subaru doesn’t love her, he refuses to kill her and instead vows to save her.
Crusch Karsten - Crusch initially thought very poorly of Subaru, seeing him as a reckless attendant of Emilia who didn’t know his place. She warmed up to him after they fought the Hakugei together, going so far as to give most of the credit for the battle’s success to him. Their relationship became neutral after she had her memories eaten by Ley. However, their friendship was reformed after Subaru unintentionally saved her from dying from Capella’s Dragon Vein poison.
Julius Juukulius - Julius initially hated Subaru upon first meeting him due to his belief that Subaru did not know his place. However, Julius’ feelings towards Subaru changed after their battle with the Hakugei, after which he apologised to Subaru for how he treated him when they first met. Julius became close with Subaru during the planning and attacking of the Witch Cult, and Julius began to consider Subaru as a friend.
Echidna - Echidna has shown interest in Subaru’s Return by Death ability, and wants to use it for her experiments. She attempted to form a contract with Subaru in order to utilise his ability, but he declined the offer, knowing that she wanted to manipulate him.

Abilities

Return by Death - Subaru returns to a ‘save point’ that is outside of his control upon his death. This is given to him by Satella and he is said to smell of the Witch after this ability activates. Attempting to reveal this power to anyone incurs some penalties. Firstly Satella’s power - the Witch’s hand - reaches out and attempts to silence him by threatening his life. Pushing past this fear causes Satella to attempt to kill the person being told instead. Finally, attempting to do so also increases the density of Witch Factor around him causing the smell of the Witch to amplify. One side effect of this is that it draws any Demon Beasts nearby to him.
Authority - Subaru seems to absorb Authorities from Sin Archbishops who die around him. He currently has the Authority of Sloth and a much weaker version of Petelgeuse’s Unseen Hand as well as the Authority of Greed from Regulus and an ability from it called Cor Leonis which allows Subaru to sustain physical or mental strain on someone else’s behalf.
Magic User - Subaru was a practitioner of Yin Magic before he damaged his gate and was able to use the spell Shamak.
Spirit User - Subaru has an innate gift that allows the forming of spirit contracts. He is currently contracted to the Artificial Spirit Beatrice, forcing him to follow several conditions:

• Subaru cannot form a contract with other Spirits
• Beatrice cannot restore mana on her own nor can she use the mana in the atmosphere (due to her nature as an Artificial Spirit)
• Beatrice can only drain mana from Subaru (which helps his body regulate mana now that his gate is damaged)

Spirit Arts - Through his contract with Beatrice, Subaru is able to use a number of special abilities:

• E・M・M translates from Japanese as "Emilia-tan is Seriously a Goddess" is an 'absolute defense magic' where Beatrice uses Yin Magic to warp time and space around Subaru. Although he cannot move while it is active, he also cannot be affected from anything outside of the barrier. It functions similarly to the Authority of Greed but doesn't carry the same risk and can be used until mana runs out.
• E・M・T translates from Japanese as "Emilia-tan is Seriously an Angel" is an 'absolute negation magic' that negates all mana based effects in a sphere centered around Subaru and Beatrice.

Parkour - Subaru trained to learn the basics from Clind.

Subaru also utilizes a whip created from a Demon Beast that he named Guiltywhip.
