OtapediaSetting - Re:Zero

Re:Zero is set in a flat world that is bordered by the Great Waterfall, and it is believed that beyond the Great Waterfall there is only an endless abyss. In the world of Re:Zero, time functions similarly to the real world, with a 24 hour day and night cycle, as well as four distinct seasons. The world of Re:Zero also has no oceans, with the majority of saltwater coming from the large lakes that are common across the world.

The continent that houses the majority of Re:Zero’s story is split into four major territories; The Sacred Vollachia Empire in the south, The Holy Kingdom of Gusteko in the north, Kararagi City States in the west, and [The Dragon Kingdom of Lugnica] in the east, which is bordered on the east by the Great Waterfall.

Notable Locations

The Kingdom of Lugnica - The Kingdom of Lugnica is the region in which a majority of the story’s events take place. It has a population of around 50 million. The architecture is similar to a medieval nation’s, though it is slightly more advanced thanks to magic.
The Kingdom of Lugnica has 5 regional capitals, of which only four are named in the series. These capitals are Lugnica (the setting for Arc 1), Priestella(the setting for Arc 5, Picoutatte, and Flanders. The Mathers’ mansion (the setting for Arc 2), Sanctuary (the setting for Arc 4), and the Pleiades Watchtower (the setting for Arc 6) are located within the Kingdom of Lugnica.
Lugnica is also known as the Dragon Kingdom of Lugnica. This is due to Lugnica’s national deity and protector being Volcania, the giant dragon that helped seal the Witch of Envy 400 years before the events of the series.

The Vollachia Empire - The Vollacia Empire is a meritocracy, meaning that it holds great value the abilities of individuals, rather than having a more traditional system of noble families.

The Vollachia Empire has the strongest army on the continent, with even their lowest ranking members being quite powerful compared to the average soldier. At the top of the Vollachian military are the Nine Divine Generals, who have great influence within Vollachia. Vollachia is often at war with Lugnica, though they are currently under a non-aggression pact.

Kararagi City States - Kararagi is a nation with architecture and food similar to Japan. In most parts of Kararagi, slavery is legal. Kararagi consists of 10 great cities, each of which is governed by a Mayor.

The Holy Kingdom of Gusteko - Gusteko is a theocracy, in which the Holy King is chosen by Odglass, one of the four great spirits that helped shape the world. Gusteko is under constant snowfall, making it hard for crops to be grown. Due to this, they rely on bountiful deposits of magical ore in order to drive their national economy. Gusteko is also home to the Assassin Organisation, which is commanded by the Sin Archbishop of Lust, Capella Emerada Lugnica.

Notable Historical Events

The Great Calamity - 400 years before the beginning of the series, the Witch of Envy went on a rampage, destroying nearly half of the world, before being sealed by Shaula, Reid Astrea, the great sage Flugel, and the dragon Volcania.

400 years ago - The current king of Lugnica, Farsale Lugnica, makes a pact with Volcania in order to protect the Kingdom of Lugnica from the Vollachia Empire.

100 years ago - Elior Forest in the Kingdom of Lugnica is attacked by the Sin Archbishop of Greed, and the Witch of Vainglory. Emilia freezes the forest in self-defence, trapping herself and a majority of the forest’s elven inhabitants in ice.

Approximately 50 years ago - In Lugnica, a decade long civil war occurs between the humans and demi-human population of the nation, known as the Demi-human War. Two notable figures from this war are the Sword Saint Theresia Van Astrea, and the ‘Sword Devil’ Wilhelm Van Astrea (known then as Wilhelm Trias). The Demi-humans eventually gave in, surrendering to the human forces. This war worsened the already strained relationship between humans and non-humans in Lugnica.

7 years ago: The Day of Red Earth and Sky - Puck unfreezes Emilia, unintentionally attracting the attention of Melakuera, the current Great Spirit of Fire. Puck successfully defeats Melakuera, inheriting the title of Great Spirit of Fire.
2 years ago - The entire Lugnican royal family began to die of an unknown disease, leading to a total lack of a ruling family in Lugnica, as well as the destruction of the pact between the Lugnican royal family and Volcania. The Council of Elders begins searching for potential candidates, leading to the royal selection.
