Emilia is the secondary protagonist of the Re:Zero series, and is a candidate for the Royal Selection Ceremony. She has purple eyes and long purple hair, which she styles with a white flower and a purple ribbon. She wears a short, long-sleeved, white and purple dress, as well as long white socks that go above the knee. Emilia is kind and enjoys helping others, but does not like to admit it, as she believes she does this out of her own selfishness. She doesn’t like opening up to others because of this, and often tries to solve her problems without the help of others. She has a habit of using old-fashioned words, due to not being fully integrated into modern culture after being freed from ice.
History
Over a century ago Emilia lived with her aunt Fortuna in Elior Forest. While she was mostly an obedient little girl, she did occasionally long to run free and wild through her village. During one of her many clandestine trips into the village she meets Geuse and quickly forms a strong friendship with him. One day the village is attacked by Pandora and Regulus. As a result Geuse goes mad and kills Fortuna. Emilia's powers go out of control as she raged and froze the entire village including herself.
Puck finds and unfreezes Emilia seven years before the start of the story. The two live together in Elior Forest which is now a snow-covered landscape. She faces the prejudice of sharing the physical description as that of the Witch of Envy from nearby human towns and she garners the reputation as the "Witch of Frost". The two also ran afoul of the Great Spirit of Fire who Puck defeated to inherit the title. A year before the start of the story Roswaal approached her and convinced her to take part in the Royal Selection.
One day while walking through the Capital City the insignia that signifies her as a Royal Candidate is stolen by Felt. This incident causes her to meet Subaru who immediately imprints favourably on her. After the Royal Selection officially began the two separated due to an argument. During that time the Witch Cult planned an attack on Emilia due to her similar appearance to the Witch of Envy. With Subaru's help she was able to escape and help protect the people of Irlam village.
After that, she goes to the Witch of Greed's Graveyard and undertakes the trials within it. She is unable to face her past and so Puck breaks his contract with her in order to help her overcome the block. She is ultimately able to find some form of peace with the events of the past. A year later she travels to Priestella where the other Royal Candidates have gathered. There, she catches the eye of Regulus who tries to take her as a bride. The city is attacked by four Sin Archbishops and she participates in the fight to push them out. Finally, she joins a journey to the Pleiades Watchtower when her friends go to seek answers from the sage Shaula.
Relationships
Natsuki Subaru - Subaru is Emilia’s knight and devoted himself to her not long after meeting her, vowing to protect her no matter how many times he has to die. Emilia does not reciprocate these feelings at first, but after seeing Subaru continuously struggle and fight for her sake she begins to show feelings for him.
Puck - Puck treats Emilia as a daughter and enjoys acting as a father figure to her. He initially met her seven years before the Royal Selection where she was frozen in the Elior Forest and he thawed her out. At the beginning of the series Puck was contracted to Emilia and bound to her service. After events in Arc 4, he broke the contract in order to allow Emilia the power to pass a trial.
Roswaal L Mathers - Roswaal supports Emilia’s participation in the Royal Selection, though at first he was only supporting her to control Subaru, in order to reach his goal of resurrecting Echidna.
Felt - Emilia and Subaru saved Felt from being killed by Elsa in the city of Lugnica, after which they became friends. Felt is very grateful towards Emila for this, and from Arc 5 onwards she refers to her as big sister (neechan). Felt is also Emilia’s rival in the Royal Selection.
Crusch Karsten - Emilia once begged a favour from Crusch to house Subaru while he healed. Crusch sees Emilia as a rival for the throne but bears no ill will towards her. She said on one occasion where Subaru left early (though not in the timeline that continues) that she wanted Emilia and her to compete in a manner befitting Royal Candidates.
Fortuna - Fortuna is Emilia's aunt and raised her in the place of her parents, and as such Emilia considers Fortuna her mother.
Echidna - Emilia does not have any ill will towards Echidna, despite Echidna’s hatred towards her. Echidna stated that she personally knows Emilia’s real parents, and that the similarities between Emilia and her mother are the cause of her hatred for Emilia.
Abilities
Spirit User - Emilia has a rare affinity for formming contracts with spirits and is currently contracted with several minor spirits that allow her to perform various magical feats, such as healing. She was formerly contracted with Puck, but Puck broke the contract to allow Emilia to pass the trials at Sanctuary during Arc 4.
Magic User - Emilia remembered how to use magic after her contract with Puck was broken. She excels in using fire magic and has been known to cast Huma, Ul Huma, and Al Huma. She is also capable of creating weapons with Ice Brand Arts and a barrier of ice weapons with Icicle Line. Ice Flower allows her to create flowers of ice at the location of wounds that feed on the blood of their host.
Melee Fighter - Despite her magical and spiritual inclinations, she is actually reasonably proficient at close-quarters combat. She utilizes a unique martial style that relies more on instincts and natural agility.
