Beatrice (also called Betty by Subaru) is an artificial spirit created by Echidna around 400 years ago. She looked like a petite girl with long cream coloured hair that is fashioned into a twin drill shape on either side of her head. She wears a full length dress with a small shawl-like cape around her shoulders all in a dark pink colour with white accents. Her clothes and hair are adorned with pink ribbons and she has a small crown affixed to her head slightly cocked to the right. Due to her nature as a spirit, her appearance cannot change permanently. Beatrice has a particularly gruff personality and chooses to not get close to most people, but is quite softhearted if you get to her good side. She also has a distinct speaking and adds kashira (roughly translating to "I suppose") at the end of some of her sentences.
History
Beatrice was created around 400 years prior to the story by Echidna and served as a helper for the Witch's experiments such as the Sanctuary Barrier. However, she does not have complete knowledge of Echidna's actions as even she didn't know about Lewes Meyer being sealed in a crystal. At some point Beatrice was tasked with the duty of guarding the library and to vaguely wait for that person which she performed diligently.
Time passed with Beatrice as the dutiful protector of the library until Subaru turned up at the Mathers mansion. She used her immense skill and knowledge to help heal him from the fatal injuries that he suffered. Upon waking up, Subaru immediately saw through her Door Crossing ability and stumbled into her library. From that point on, he consistently went to her for advice particularly dealing with curses and mana drain. Using that knowledge, he baited a death curse onto himself which was then removed by Beatrice. After his ordeal in the woods, Beatrice once more healed his wounds but told Subaru that the new layers of curses on him was impossible to remove, prompting Rem, Ram, and Subaru to enter the woods once more.
With that harrowing event over, she returns to her duties in the library. Later Subaru once more goes to her for help when attempting to unravel the mysteries of the Witch of Greed's Graveyard. In an attack on the Mathers mansion her library started to break apart and Subaru managed to convince her to accept a contract with him. From that point onwards Beatrice would accompany Subaru everywhere and serve as critical firepower and source of wisdom in the events in Priestella and the Pleiades Watchtower.
Relationships
Echidna - Beatrice was loyal and deferrent to her creator Echidna. She willingly carried out the order to guard the library for centuries despite the growing loneliness from the isolation.
Roswaal L. Mathers - Owner of the mansion that her library is connected to. She served as a mentor in magic to Roswaal.
Natsuki Subaru - Natsuki Subaru is her current contractor. His tenacity and ability to always pick the door to her library wore down her gruff exterior very quickly. In one of the loops of his first few days at the mansion he convinced her to protect him after Subaru had broken down from the strain of repeatedly dying. In that timeline she showed a willingness to even fight Roswaal to fulfill her deal. She now accompanies Subaru everywhere on his journey and augments his abilities as part of their spirit contract.
Abilities
Magic User - Beatrice is capable of a variety of magic but in particular is a master of Yin Magic. She is capable of a very large array of spells though her current mana is fairly depleted thus limiting her power.
- Different varieties of Shamak including El Shamak, Ul Shamak, and Al Shamak.
- Different varieties of Minya such as El Minya and Ul Minya.
- Door Crossing allows Beatrice to connect the door of the library to any door she wishes to.
- Infinite Corridor creates a spatial loop of an infinitely repeating hallway. The target(s) must find the right door to escape this.
- Murak which reduces the effect of gravity, allowing spring-like jumps and even flight (though it is highly susceptible to winds).
- Beatrice can perform Healing Magic despite the fact that it is outside of the element of Yin. She is skilled enough to be able to regenerate lost organs.
Curve Removal - Beatrice is able to both detect and remove curses though removal is limited to before the curse's activation.
Mana Drain - Beatrice can absorb mana into herself from any target via touch.
Contract Spirit - Her current spirit contractor is Subaru who is (according to her) not a true Spirit User. She also has a very high mana consumption rate which she used to circumvent by draining mana from people in the mansion using the library as a conduit. Her nature as an Artificial Spirit forces several conditions on Subaru:
- Subaru cannot form a contract with other Spirits.
- Beatrice cannot restore her own mana.
- Beatrice cannot use the mana in the atmosphere.
- Beatrice can only drain mana from Subaru.
The final condition somewhat works in Subaru's favour as the damage that he inflicted on his own gate means that he cannot properly regulate the flow of mana in his own body.
