Synopsis

This arc has not yet been completely finished in the light novel series. The following synopsis is mostly based on the web novel. As such, it should be considered as a first draft and not canon to the story.

Due to the length of this arc (which is not even complete yet), the synopsis is broken into two parts. For the second part, click here.

Back to the Mathers Mansion

Fresh off of the ordeal in Priestella Subaru and company planned to visit the Pleiades Watchtower to consult with the sage Shaula hoping that she had answers to the problems left by the Sin Archbishops. Their first stop is the Mathers mansion. Meili is convinced to join the party. Ram invites herself to the group and Subaru brings Rem's comatose body in the hopes of finding a way to cure her.

On the Road

The group arrive at Mirula which is the town closest to the watchtower without much issue. From there on the journey becomes more treacherous. Navigating through the Augria Sand Dunes is a slow process as they avoid the three 'Sand Times' every day. They also attempt to mark their progress using ice pillars in case they lose their way however Shaula destroys them as the group progresses. While camping during the first night in the dunes Julius says that they have not made any progress despite the day's worth of travel. Anastasia theorized that the space is being distorted and the only way through is during a Sand Time. It takes several days worth of attempts but they finally manage to make progress towards the tower and find themselves in a flower meadow.
Unfortunately the meadow is filled with a type of Demon Beast known as Oiranguma or 'Courtesan Bears'. They cautiously made their way forward leaning heavily on Meili's ability to move the Demon Beasts out of the way without conflict. This tactic works for a time but eventually some of the Courtesan Bears act up which causes an Earth Dragon they had rented to make a ruckus. This causes other Courtesan Bears in the area to wake up. As the group ran away Shaula attacks them from the tower and kills everyone instantly.
Subaru comes back to consciousness just before the Earth Dragon freaks out but is unable to prevent the party from being wiped out again. In the next timeline he forces the group to fully retreat back to the beginning of the flower meadow to formulate a plan. This time Subaru uses a special ability he calls EMM ('Emilia-tan is Seriously a Goddess') to negate the deadly attacks. This works for a time until the entire group is hit with a space distortion attack and separated.

Into The Tower

Subaru, Ram, Anastasia, and Subaru's Earth Dragon Patrasche are transported underground below the sands. They regroup and explore the area that they've been sent to. The paths available to them are deadly and Subaru dies a few times before finally being saved by Shaula as they battled a fierce Demon Beast. Subaru loses consciousness at this point and revisits the shadowy realm between his Returns from Death. When he regains consciousness he finds himself in the Pleiades Watchtower along with everyone else in the initial party who had made it there safely.

Sage Shaula and Sage Flugel

Shaula is immediately attached to Subaru. She refuses to answer any questions the group has for her but relents when Subaru orders her to do so. They learn that Shaula isn't actually a sage at all and that the title belonged to her master Flugel. She also reveals that the tower consists of numerous floors that are named after the stars in the Pleiades constellation of stars and that each floor past the third layer featured a trial that barred access to the corresponding floor's library.
Together the group travels up to the third layer - Taygeta - an empty white space filled with nothing but a floating monolith. Subaru touches the monolith and starts the trial. Through some clever deduction Subaru solves the trial using knowledge of constellations from Earth which would be impossible for anyone in the other world to know. The group is rewarded for completing the trial with access to the Taygeta library - a collection of books with all of the memories of dead people. Reading the book of someone you knew caused you to be sucked into the book's memories.
