Roswaal L Mathers is the lord of the Mathers Mansion. Roswaal’s body is possessed by his ancestor Roswaal A Mathers, who has been possessing his descendant’s bodies for generations.
Roswaal is tall, with a lean build and pale skin. He has heterochromia, as his left eye is yellow, and his right eye is blue. He has long dark blue hair, and his face is decorated with purple eyeshadow and lipstick. He wears an outfit comparable to that of a jester, with a miniature black tophat, pink and purple shirt and pants, long black and red boots, and a long black collared cape with red lining.
Personality
Roswaal is caring towards his servants, particularly Rem and Ram, as shown by his concern for Rem’s death to an unknown cause in arc 2. He has good relations with demi-humans, and works hard to free the faction of demi-humans trapped within Sanctuary. He is quite intelligent, as he was able to figure out that Subaru was capable of looping through time upon death.
Roswaal is adamant on resurrecting his former teacher Echidna by any means necessary, even going so far as to sacrifice those close to him and, even himself.
History
400 years ago, Roswaal became Echidna’s apprentice after she saved his life by fixing his defective magic gate. Roswaal was badly wounded in a fight against Hector, who was pursuing Echidna at the time.
Roswaal began possessing his descendants with the intent of resurrecting Echidna, after she was killed by Satella.
Relationships
Echidna - Echidna saved Roswaal’s life and taught him how to use magic. Roswaal shows an obsession for Echidna, as he will do anything to resurrect her. Echidna cares for Roswaal as well, as she risked her life to save him from Hector.
Beatrice - Roswaal and Beatrice show respect towards each other, as they were both close with Echidna 400 years ago. They became closer after the events at Sanctuary during arc 4.
Rem and Ram - Roswaal is protective of Rem and Ram, and cares about their wellbeing. Roswaal rescued the twins from their village when it was under attack from the Witch Cult.
Emilia - Roswaal supports Emilia’s participation in the Royal Selection, though at first he was only supporting her to control Subaru, in order to reach his goal of resurrecting Echidna.
Subaru Natsuki - Roswaal and Subaru seemed to get along well upon first meeting, with Roswaal appearing to be quite grateful towards Subaru for retrieving Emilia’s insignia. However, Roswaal did not fully trust Subaru, and was quick to blame him for Rem’s sudden death.
Their relationship changes quite drastically during arc 4, when Roswaal’s intention to use Subaru’s Return by Death ability to revive Echidna is revealed, leading to Subaru seeing Roswaal as an enemy. After the conclusion of arc 4, Subaru becomes more tolerant of Roswaal, after Roswaal agreed to help him and Emilia.
Hector - Roswaal considers Hector his rival, and began to dress and act like him after being defeated by him in the past.
Abilities
Divine Protection of Sorcery - Roswaal’s Divine Protection makes him skilled with all 6 elements of magic. He is considered to be the strongest mage in Lugnica, and his power is equated to that of an entire army. He is also exceptionally skilled in using magic thanks to his training with Echinda.
Magic -
* Flying Magic - Roswaal is able to use this magic to float or fly in the sky.
* Goa - Roswaal conjures a plume of fire directed at a target.
* Ul Goa - Roswaal propels a large number of fire bullets at a target, which causes flames to scatter upon impact.
* Al Goa - Roswaal creates an inferno centered on a target. He considers this his most powerful magic.
* Altemillion - Roswaal is able to change the weather of the area around him.
Martial Arts - Roswaal is skilled in hand-to-hand combat techniques.
Yellow Eye - Roswaal’s yellow left eye is able to neutralize enemy magic.
