Summary

Demon Beasts (魔獣 majū) are monsters with magical powers that were created by the Witch of Gluttony Daphne's subconscious in such a way as to sate any hunger — initially, her own after her transformation into a Witch. The Demon Beasts feed on mana and grow in size indefinitely, which seemed like a good idea to provide as much meat as possible. The plan went awry, however, as the beasts far outgrew the "kettle" size and numbers and turned into monsters that started hunting their intended consumers themselves instead. Daphne herself has expressed no concern over the growth and evolution of her Demon Beasts who have now become dangerous threats to any living thing who cross their paths.

Daphne's Three Great Demon Beasts

Three Demon Beasts stand apart from all other Demon Beasts as great and terrible, capable of destruction beyond the scope of other lesser Demon Beasts. They have caused damage to humanity on the scale of natural disasters, are actively avoided by people if they can help it, and have even when just roaming the land act as disruptive forces to trade routes and travel. They are considered extremely dangerous and specialized hunting parties have been put together to hunt these down (normally to no success).

Hakugei

Japanese Pronunciation Translation
白鯨 hakugei White Whale

A humongous (around 165m/550ft long) flying albino whale with a hardened skin. Flies using a glowing wheel-like growth on its back.

Hakugei spreads a mist-like substance which has been discovered to be its own altered mana and takes two forms. The Mist of Mental Contamination (精神汚染の霧 seishin osen no kiri) is the mist Hakugei floats around in; it causes mana poisoning. The Mist of Elimination (消滅の霧 shōmetsu no kiri) can erase victims completely, including the memories of them that the nearby people had. Its roar can drive some insane. When in danger, Hakugai releases clones that are equal to it in size and shares the original's power. These clones act as dangerous diversions to attempt to keep the main body safe while the original may do anything like watching from afar or attempting to escape.

For centuries the Hakugei had been devouring merchants, opposing armies, and even cities. Finally Subaru joined forces with Crusch Karsten and Anastasia Hoshin to put together a hunting group that was able to take it down in Arc 3.

Kurohebi

Japanese Pronunciation Translation
黒蛇 kurohebi (or kokuja in web novels) Black Serpent

The snake (assumedly) that has been witnessed to infect with a hundred diseases on touch, it exudes a sentient poison Black Water with incredibly severe physical conditions, and the ground it traverses becomes cursed, meaning that nobody but Demon Beasts can live on it anymore.

Nobody has seen the creature — they only heard the slithering sound, therefore whether it is actually a snake is conjecture. It is also utterly chaotic, obeying no master as it moves about.

Ōusagi

Japanese Pronunciation Translation
大兎 ōusagi Great Rabbit

White rabbits with a horn protruding from the forehead. Despite the name, the rabbits themselves are not actually large — it is their sheer number that counts, and they keep procreating, their numbers ever growing. Daphne's own everlasting hunger is part of their magical nature, and that hunger is too great to think of other things; when Subaru caught a glimpse of that hunger himself, he was suddenly solely concentrated on eating his own arm and nothing else mattered.

Up to the current point in the story, the Oousagi have been sealed into another dimension by Beatrice's magic in Arc 4 though the effort took a great deal of mana and she is unable to recast the spell (whether to bring them back or seal anything else).
